Watches for your Styles-Many Choices

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

omega-seamaster.jpgThe modern watch consumer has more choices when it comes to the style of which wristwatch to wear than any other time in history.  For my first blog entry I’ll briefly explain the basic types of watches available.

The most commonly worn watch is the sport watch . Sport watch is a broad, if not over used term which simply means a watch designed for a specific purpose, ie diving, running, driving, etc.  The sport watch has become the quintessential every day watch for beginning watch collectors and the most popular types are the chronograph, the dive watch, and pilot watch . The sport or “sporty watch” is usually a round shape, made from stainless steel, and most commonly attached to stainless steel bracelet, although leather straps are usually offered as an option. Dial color choices are usually the basic black, white, silver, blue, and sometimes yellow or orange, depending on the manufactures’ offerings. Some great examples are the Omega Seamaster Dive Chronometer, the Breitling Chronomat Evolution, and the IWC Mark XV.

When shopping for a more formal timepiece one has seemingly countless options to consider.  First, there are many shapes of watch cases used in modern watches; the traditional round, the rectangular, the tonneau or barrel shape, the square, and the elliptical shape watch. Then there is the dial color choice, black and silver being the most common, but the catalogs of various manufactures offer mother of pearl, blue, gray, white, salmon, champagne and even green. Metal choice is very important because it not only affects the look of the watch, it can dramatically affect the price of your new watch. Dress watches are offered in stainless steel, but with a larger budget one can find gold or platinum watches.  The choice of metal bracelet vs. leather strap is important to the look of your watch as well as your budget as gold or platinum pieces with bracelets command much higher prices. Another option for your dress watch is a diamond bezel and or dial.  This is becoming an option on many models from most manufactures and is an excellent way to add flare to your timepiece.

Beyond sport watches and dress watches there is the complicated watch . In horlogical terms complication is defined as any function of a watch other than the basic time. Some examples include a perpetual calendar, a minute repeater, a power reserve indicator, a tourbillon escapement, moon phase indicator, and a GMT function. Highly complicated watches are usually considered more collectible, more formal, and are offered in the range of metals and colors as are lesser complicated dress watches. Complicated watches are even offered in some sport collections as well. Complicated mechanical watches are produced by the finest watch manufactures because they are more difficult to build and command higher prices. Some important examples are the Girard Perregaux Vintage 45 Perpetual Calendar, the Roger Dubuis Golden Square Tourbillon, and the IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater watch.

These are the basic style choices and types of wristwatches available today.  There are many more to talk about but I just want to share the basics with you as most watch buyers fall into the following categories: the casual watch wearer, the formal watch wearer, and the serious collector.  Respectively they shop for the sport watch, the formal dress watch, and the complicated watch.

Celebrity Watch Fetishes

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

dubuis.jpgThere is always good conversation when people start talking about what wristwatches are most popular with celebrities. If you would have asked me a year or so ago I would have said it was anything from Franck Muller that was the celebrity watch of choice.

Ozzie and Sharon Osbourne wore them on their highly rated show “The Osbournes”. Also, P. Diddy, Elton John, Robin Williams and Demi Moore have also been seen wearing these cool timepieces. I even read somewhere that a head of state gave King George II (Little Bush) a Franck Muller as a present. A few years ago it seemed like Frank Muller was being worn by everyone.

As you may know in Hollywood, fads tend to fade as fast as a Von Dutch trucker hat and the tides soon turned and a few other brands seemed to fall into favor with celebrities.

These day, I am seeing a ton of celebrities wearing watches from Panerai and Breitling . If you look closely in the movie Elizabethtown you will notice that Orlando Bloom is wearing a Panerai. In the action adventure genre, Sylvester Stallone (huge watch collector) and Arnold Schwarzenegger are also big Panerai fans even though Arnie has helped design some watches for Audemars Piguet. I guess you could say its Paneraipalooza in Hollywood right now.

In the world of hip-hop and pop music, you will see big people like Suge Knight sporting the Breitling Bentley around town. Nick Lachey, freshly divorced from Jessica Simpson, has also been spotted in some trendy LA eateries with a Breitling watch on his wrist. In the world of rap (kind of), Britney Spears has been known to buy her hubby, K-Fed, (latest rap sensation), a Breitling which he wears regularly.

I don’t think the Spears clan has quite stopped at Breitling though. I have seen pictures of K-Fed wearing a Dubey & Shaldenbrand Grand Chrono and a Roger Dubuis Golden Square.

More next week,

Celebrities Love Chandelier Earrings at the Oscars

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

chandelier.jpgIt seems that the  red carpet at the Oscars this year was dripping with diamond chandelier earrings . A lot of our favorite celebrities wore an elegant black dress and a gorgeous pair of chandelier earrings  dripping with diamonds. This was the definitely the ticket to this years award ceremony. Beyonce’ had about five inches of diamonds hanging from those beautiful lobes. She made a total fashion statement and looked like A super model to boot!

The great part about chandelier earrings is that they have a way of framing the face of anyone who wears them. They are incredible accents of bright glitter and they sparkle intensely for whoever was lucky enough to wear them.

Any woman who wears such a statement usually sparkles from within, which seems to add to the celebrity glamour of the individual. I witness this every time I place these items upon an adored one.

On the red carpet, Gwyneth Paltrow had on a gorgeous pair of diamond chandelier earrings about three inches in length. They had a loop inside of a loop of diamonds and she wore them without a necklace, which is a very pretty look for her. they were very delicate with smaller diamonds.

Julie Delpy wore Fred Leighton 22 karat ruby and diamond chandelier earrings which were breathtaking to say the least! These earrings were also about three inches in length and really had a magnificent presence! We happen to carry a beautiful selection of these earrings in our store in Carmel.

Julia Roberts decided to go understated with her three tier diamond drop, which were about an inch or so in length. She could have carried off much more of a fashion statement, the deserving star that she is, but I must admit that it was Beyonce’ that had my vote for the most outstanding, elegant look. Her earrings totally complemented her and seemed to sway with her every move. They worked with her magnificently.

Its all about fashion, fashion, fashion! When you find earrings like that, never ever let them out of your grasp! You will just have to own them!

Eternity Bands-Eternally Gorgeous

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

eternity-band.jpgAnyone searching for inspiration in the anniversary gift department should consider the stunning beauty of an eternity band .  As we all know, diamonds  never go out of style, and an unending band of bright white sparklers never fails to impress.  With their solid diamond design, these bands are symbolic of unending love and devotion.

And don’t think that there is anything boring about one of these beauties.  There are nearly endless variations on the classic eternity band depending upon diamond shape, size, setting style, and metal type used.  If those options aren’t enough, you can always incorporate colored gemstones like sapphire or ruby to spice things up.

For a classic look, a mutual prong set band of round brilliant diamonds provides unrivaled sparkle and will complement nearly any engagement ring.  If your partner is active and needs something secure, try a channel set eternity band.  Princess cut diamonds are particularly good for this setting style as they provide a solid diamond look without any gaps.  If you need something more eccentric, there are a variety of diamond shape combination pieces that are sure to grab the eye.

Along with their symbolic significance, eternity bands solve the age-old problem of a “rolling” band showing off awkwardly on your finger.  However, there are some drawbacks to eternity rings that you should be aware of.  First and foremost, the sheer magnitude of stone weight ensures that these rings will be much more expensive than a 5 or 7-stone ring with similar diamonds.  Essentially, you end up paying for diamonds that you don’t see.  Also, once made up, it is nearly impossible to adjust the size on an eternity band.

Wristwatch FAQ’s

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

fake-breitling.jpg With my inaugural issue of FAQ on Watches at Lussori.com I would like to address what I believe to be the most frequent of the FAQ’s: “How can I tell if my watch is real or fake?” The easiest answer to this question is in fact another question; “Where did you get it?” The answer to this is varied. I usually hear such things as “It was a gift” or “I bought it used” or “I bought it on an online auction”. If you purchase your timepiece through a reputable, authorized retailer, this is a question you never have to ask, but with most people asking this question this is not the case (with the exception of gifts received). When clients either email or call us with the question, it is difficult at best to determine whether the timepiece they are holding is genuine. Here are a few key points you can use in making the determination:
• Price ~ the old cliché “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is” holds true.
• Serial Numbers ~ if there is no serial number I consider the watch to be of questionable origin.
• Boxes & Papers ~ again if these are not available for a “new” watch I would again question the origin.
• Buttons without functions ~ if your timepiece has buttons that are just for looks, chances are it is not authentic.

If at all possible, take the timepiece in question to the nearest authorized retailer for that brand. A good salesperson should be able to tell if your timepiece is authentic.
There are many replicas (fakes) all over the internet today for just about every brand. For Lussori.com the most asked about timepieces are Breitlings. It seems that many are coming to the US via our troops in the Middle East and via the online auction companies. Some key points you can look for with regards to Breitling are:
• Model Number/Serial number combinations ~ many of the replicas contain a “model number” that begins with a letter followed by 5 or 6 numbers and the serial number 1111. (i.e. A26032/ No1111)
• Model Numbers ~ Breitling has a specific code they follow for their watches. It follows this format and has for some time; A= All Steel, B= Two-Tone (gold rider tabs & crown), D=Steel & 18kt, E= All Titanium, F= Two-tone Titanium, H= 18k Rose Gold, J= 18k White Gold, K= 18k Yellow gold and L= Platinum. For example if you have an all steel watch and the “model” number begins with a B, it is probably not authentic.

Remember, the best way to be sure a new timepiece you are buying is authentic is to purchase through an authorized retailer. If you are buying pre-owned, there are many reputable dealers for pre-owned timepieces. Be very cautious when purchasing through online auctions. We have had more than a few customers tell us they had spent in excess of $3,000.00 only to find out it what they purchased was not authentic.
I hope this information is helpful to you in making a determination about your timepiece. To locate an authorized dealer nearest you to take your timepiece in for evaluation, look under retailers on the brand website. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email at sandy@lussori.com.

Can a Watch be profound? The Ulysse Nardin "Jungle Minute Repeater"

Monday, April 17th, 2006

jungle-repeater.jpg
In the daily rhythm of working within the watch  industry, one sees many watches, some nice, others that are exceptionally fine, and then there is that rarest class—the kind that stay in your memory long after they are joined to the wrist of a happy owner.  It’s the latter category that I particularly enjoy.  Having had the opportunity to spend a fleeting few moments with  Ulysse Nardin’s  “Jungle Minute Repeater”, I can unequivocally state that this gorgeous watch–no, more than that–this object of mechanical art, will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Gazing into the dial, you are immediately transfixed by the sheer detail of the jungle scene that seems to spring forth.  The hornbill, the tiger, the foliage, and the waterfall with the fish are all very three dimensional and take on a life of their own.  You can almost hear the stream trickle as the rhinoceros bends his head to drink.  The cloissonne enamel work, obviously undertaken by an accomplished master of the challenging art demonstrates immediately that the watch in hand is something rare and glorious.  But it is not until the watch is brought to life with a turn of the winding crown, and the minute repetition slide on the caseband is activated, that the full charm of this poetic watch is revealed.

Suddenly the jungle begins to stir.  The tiger paw moves in synchrony with the chimes of the hours and the low tones of the quarter hours, while the hornbill on the branch bobs rhythmically to the treble notes of the quarters and the individual peals of the minutes.  The small seconds display is not shown by a hand, but by fish which seem to effortlessly glide by on the miniature waterfall coursing through the foliage.  A glimpse into the sapphire caseback reveals the finely executed Lemania minute repeating movement glittering within; it unfolds the fundamental basics of the play on the dial, but in no way diminishes the magic when we inevitably turn the watch over to be drawn into the pulsebeat of the jungle once again.  The finish of the mechanism and the purity of the chimes ringing forth speak to that within us which is civilized, while the mesmerizing dial beckons us deep into into it’s primal beauty, providing a reminder that we are but a part of nature ourselves.

This is definitely a watch I will cherish in my memory, for above all, how many objects of art can speak to the duality of human nature in such a satisfying way?

Sincerely,
Adam Keith, Lussori, Inc.
