Buying Diamonds Online

Monday, July 31st, 2006

diamondring.jpgAt Lussori, we offer a large selection of semi-mounts and other diamond ring  mountings.  As a result, I often end up discussing loose diamonds with my customers.  I’ve noticed that many of my customers who are searching for ring mountings haven’t actually purchased a diamond yet.  Rather, they are planning on purchasing a diamond from an online diamond seller.

Because I’ve been through this with a lot of customers, I thought I’d explain Lussori’s unique approach to selling loose diamonds .  Firstly, I’d like to mention that we are always happy to supply a diamond for any of our ring mountings, and we are very competitive on pricing.  Along with this, we offer a service that is rare in the online diamond industry; we will have a “line-up” of diamonds sent to us based on your criteria, and we will choose the best diamond of the bunch for you!

The main problem with purchasing a diamond online is that selecting a diamond based on technical information provides an incomplete picture.  When it comes down to it, the most important thing about selecting a diamond is being able to look at the stone and recognize its beauty.  Regardless of what a diamond certificate says, some diamonds have the sparkle, fire and brilliance you are looking for, and others do not.  We have GIA graduates on staff here who can determine grading aspects such as color and clarity.  However, more importantly, our employees have a trained eye that comes courtesy of years of experience working with diamonds.

In our modern internet age, customers are being taught to purchase a diamond based on specs found on a certificate.  These specs will give you a general idea of how a diamond looks, but they don’t tell the whole story.  Along with the commonly identified features of color, clarity and carat weight, there are other factors which can have a severe effect on the way a diamond looks.  Chief among these aspects is the “cut” of a diamond.  Aspects of a diamond’s cut include, polish, symmetry of the facets, and proportions like depth and table measurements.  On top of all this, there are variables such as florescence to factor in.

All of this info is usually enough to start your head spinning, and it can be very hard to get back on track.  This is why we offer to select a diamond based on your criteria.  After discussing your priorities and budget with one of our diamond/jewelry experts, you can rest assured that we will select a diamond which will meet and probably exceed your expectations.

Celebrity Watches – HBO Entourage

Monday, July 31st, 2006

iwc-spitfire.jpgAnyone who knows me knows that I am addicted to the HBO show “Entourage” .

On the show Kevin Dillon plays “Johnny Drama”, brother “Vincent Chase” who is played by Adrian Grenier . So what is Kevin Dillon wearing on his wrist? At the 2006 ESPY style lounge Kevin was photographed wearing an IWC Spitfire watch. He took a few photos with it on and generally seemed to like it. Whether or not he walked away with it, I can’t confirm.

One of my favorite cast member on Entourage , Jeremy Piven (AKA “Ari Gold”) recently had a birthday dinner at the Polaroid Beach House in Malibu with some of his good friends on July 23rd. He took a lot of pictures with his good friend Lindsay Lohan (who wouldn’t?). Happy birthday Jeremy!

While getting close with his good friend Lindsay, Jeremy was photographed wearing what looks like a Franck Muller Long Island watch which is one of my favorite watches. Jeremy didn’t always rock the Franck Muller as he wore an unidentifiable watch to the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards and was spotted last year talking to Hamptons Magazine wearing a stainless steel Gevril .

So it seems that we have at least one celebrity watch geek on my favorite show.

Jeremy-Send me any email so we can talk watches and “hug it out”.

Thoughts on Why Watches Appeal to Us

Friday, July 14th, 2006

royal-oak1.jpgTo some, a watch  is merely a means to an end, an object which provides them the time of day at a glance.  To others, the watch is a symbol of their position in life, a subtle indication that they have “arrived” at a certain point of acheivement, and in a quiet but effective way they want to tell passersby who are observant.  Some people wear watches  which remind them of people they have known or loved, providing to them a human connection not ordinarily associated with many material objects.  Ask somebody else, and he or she will tell you it’s just plain fun to own different watches.

To me, I guess, a watch can be all of these things and more.  The best kind of watch for me is one that becomes part of my arm, and indeed, a part of my life—who I am, if you will.   I am not a watch investor or speculator; I buy to hopefully gain momentos I will keep for the rest of my life.  This is why I’ve come to feel it’s so important to carefully consider before buying or otherwise acquiring.  In my case it isn’t just because I plan to deplete my paltry bank account a little further, and I’d better be sure it’s worth it before I push myself a little closer to financial ruin; it’s due to the fact I want to feel a connection to the watch long after the transaction is completed.

What human events are connected to this watch?  Who made it?  Does it tell something about the time period in which it was created, or pay homage to one that has passed or is yet to be?  (If the latter rhetorical question seems a bit fantastic, look no further than the creations of Urwerk or Vianney Halter to see the vision of those who project traditional mechanics into a futuristic realm.)  If it’s a pre-owned piece, or a vintage watch, who wore it and what did it mean to the original owner or owners?

In that vein, I doubt few watches I’ll ever handle will mean as much to me as my granddad’s 1016 Rolex Explorer , with it’s matte dial marked by aged, yellowed tritium and the reliable and accurate 1570 caliber movement.  That well-used old Rolex  is a classic and historically notable sport watch to be sure, but more than that, its basic and purposeful stainless steel form reflects the ethic of my grandfather–his sturdy character and his appreciation of elegant function over superfluous ornamentation.  Someday, I will be honored to look after it, and would never dream of selling it.  I would sooner give it to someone who had the proper respect for its human qualities as I see them, than take a sack of cash from a speculator merely interested in a valuable vintage watch.

As far as “new” watches go, my AP Royal Oak  15300 which I acquired last year has been my favorite; I have enjoyed it so much since getting it that I have honestly not lately been tempted by any new ticking beauties.  I love everything about it, from its movement, to the legend of its creation,  and even the design, which is a masculine ornamentation at its most tasteful.  My Royal Oak  is pure enjoyment, and wearing it brings a smile to my face, each and every day.  Was it worth the money in retrospect?  Hands down!

At the risk of sounding hypocritical after what I said before about being careful, I readily plead guilty to having made mistakes, buying watches which were later sold.   But, that said, I’ve learned a lot through those experiences, not just about watches, but about my own tastes; I’m much more analytical at this point–and a lot pickier.  I think the worst is behind me, and I have moved into a phase of real appreciation.  This is opposed to acquisition mode, where frenzied thoughts of “What’s the NEXT great watch to get?!” are the first thing that spring to mind the very moment a new watch is buckled on the arm.   I suppose we all have to go through some of the latter to arrive at the former, be it with watches or anything else in life, for that matter.

Is this to say that one can’t have many watches which are significant and non-disposable keepers?  Of course not–each watch has it’s own unique appeal, history, or tale to tell.  But, careful consideration of what makes a watch special to YOU, will make your watch collection–be it large or small–much more meaningful.

Even if it happens to be a collection of only one…

Best Regards,

Adam Keith

Right-Hand Rings

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

right-hand-ring.jpg Recently, a large number of jewelry manufacturers have been putting emphasis on right-hand rings  in their collections and advertising.  Right-hand rings, also known simply as fashion rings , are basically diamond fashion rings that a woman can wear as an accessory.  These rings can be meant for casual day wear, professional wear, or even as elegant dress pieces.

Right-hand rings are the perfect gift for a woman who likes to show off her love of sparkling diamond jewelry.  And let’s be honest here, most women like to show off their sparklies!  The design can range from every-day basic to totally funky.  Kwiat , for example has a big selection of right hand rings in their “Starburst” collection, “Solaris” collection, and a variety of other collections.  These rings usually feature a mass of mid to small size diamonds in unique patterns and designs.  Also, these rings often feature less common diamond cuts such as baguettes, marquise cut, and pear shaped diamonds.

Another popular form of right-hand diamond fashion rings is eternity and half-band diamond rings.  We carry a variety of unique bands from manufacturers such as Sasha Primak .  These bands come in a mass of variations including floral designs, convex and concave pave designs, and designs featuring filigree and engraving.  It’s also very popular to include other precious gemstones such as sapphire, ruby, or emerald to add a splash of color.

If you are searching for a right-hand fashion ring as a gift, consider your loved one’s design preferences.  Take a look at her jewelry collection and search for specific designs, diamond shapes, metal types, and trends to determine what type of fashion ring might fit with her collection.  Also, remember that you can always call us for advice on [tag] jewelry [tag] matching and selection.

IWC Aquatimer and "Lucky Number Slevin"

Monday, July 10th, 2006

aquatimer.jpgDoes product placement work on me? Apparently so…

I was at a movie theater a month or so ago and saw a movie called ” Lucky Number Slevin” which is your typical shoot em up, good guy/bad guy, twisted plot flick. It’s actually not a bad movie. It stars Josh Hartnett and Bruce Willis .

I won’t give away the story, but one of the important clues in the flick happened to be a dead person watch. In a particular scene in the movie, the camera pans down on one of the characters. He was wearing a black suit and an IWC Aquatimer Chronograph. I was amazed by how clear the shot of the watch was. I was amazed how cool the Aquatimer looked on the big screen.

So a month or so later, I am in our showroom in Carmel, Ca chatting with one of our Lussori representatives. I do not know how or why, but I gravitated toward the IWC case and there it was, the IWC Aquatimer Chronograph. It was calling to me.

I asked the representative to open the case. I examined it, and then put it on. My lust for this watch began at this very moment. I felt as cool as Josh Hartnett (but I’m not). Before this, I never thought of owning an IWC, but now I am trying to figure out how I could get my hands on one.

Am I that much of a product placement sucker OR was it that I never realized how cool this watch actually was?

Did I need a movie to show me the light? Who knows, but all I know is I want an Aquatimer now!

What a Woman Wants…In a Watch

Monday, July 10th, 2006

cats-eye.jpgIt is very interesting to consider what women are looking for in a timepiece today. I know what I like. For me it isn’t just one brand or complication or style or shape that interests me….it is almost as if the watch itself comes to life. Take my Corum  Classical GMT  as an example. The dial is the ocean blue with the continents laid out. It reminds me of the different places I have been lucky enough to travel to and speaks of places I would love to travel to.

The functionality of it speaks for itself…a second time zone with a world time feature with the easy push buttons for quick adjustments when traveling. Another of my favorites is my Breitling Cockpit Lady in stainless steel. It is a great watch that, believe it or not, lends itself to blue jeans yet with the diamond bezel goes easily into the evenings and something a little more dressy. It is not too large but is not a watch that would ever be accused of being dainty! There are watches that I am on the lookout for but haven’t found the perfect fit.

I am trying to decide on a perpetual calendar. I am ready to move into the more complicated realm of watches but even for me this is a tough decision. I have been eyeing the Glashuette  Original Senator Perpetual Calendar. Even though I don’t mind a large case this one would not be too overbearing for me. I love the layout of the dial and the fact that it is available in stainless steel! Another watch that has caught my eye is the Girard-Perregaux  Cat’s Eye Bi-Retrograde. It’s not exactly a perpetual calendar but it does show the day of the week and the seconds in a retrograde format as well as the date and the moon-phase and to top it off you can get it with diamonds, too! It is complicated and feminine at the same time. For the time being (no pun intended) I will keep researching my options and I will get back to you with more musings! Let me know if you have any suggestions.
