Weighty Issues? How Much Does Your Wristwatch Weigh?

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

capeland-s.jpgHave you ever taken your watch off and weighed it?

With the ever increasing size of watches these days they are getting to be pretty heavy. My Breitling Chrono Cockpit on a leather strap with a deployment buckle is just shy of a quarter pound So, I thought I would do a check around the store and see who has the heaviest watches.

• Stainless steel Roger Dubuis AquaMare  on a rubber strap with a deployment buckle which weighs in at 5.4oz.
• Breitling Bentley Motors on a steel Speed Bracelet weighing a whopping 7.4oz.
• Stainless steel Baume & Mercier Hampton Milleis  with diamonds coming in at 1.8oz.
• Baume & Mercier Hampton, but this one is the Classic in 18k yellow gold with diamonds. It weighs 1.9oz.
•  Rolex steel and gold Lady Datejust on a jubilee bracelet-2.0oz
• Roger Dubuis Easydiver in Stainless Steel with a white gold bezel on rubber strap with a deployment buckle – 7.0oz

So as you can see in this small sampling we have a couple of watches that weigh nearly half a pound! We may need to start a new category for watches on the site….Fitness tools!

If you a looking to shed some of the weight on your arm you would do well to consider the IWC Aquatimer in Titanium or the Omega Seamaster Diver 300m Chronograph or the Baume &  Mercier Capeland S #8220. These watches still are pretty big in but don’t weigh you down.

How much does your watch weigh? Do you mind if it heavy? Let me know…maybe I’ll send you a prized Lussori baseball cap!

The "Daily Beater": A term of Horological Endearment

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

ingenieur.jpg     Luxury watches  are a pretty crazy obsession. For those of us who love, drool over, and get worked up about all things horological, the thought of wearing a watch which doesn’t have provenance, pedigree, panache, or any other associated superlatives (and those are all purely subjective)—is about as appealing as eating wheat bran washed down with a cup of hose water. Sure, you can do it, but it’s not much fun. Similarly, you can get by with just about any watch that tells time, but it’s really a nice thing to be able to bond with a watch which can take the rigors of the daily shuffle, while still being an object that gives you that sense of calm and I cringe to say it—wellness?– every time you glance at it.

Levity aside, what I’m really speaking about is the day-to-day watch, sometimes referred to as “a beater”. While the term might sound a bit harsh, it is really meant with great respect—this is the one watch you can always have on you, regardless of what you are doing. Such a watch should be able to get really wet, gain character through each scrape and scratch, and should be pretty sturdy—it’s movement, while of course being mechanical, must also be durable. Most importantly, you should love to look at it, as it is something you will wear a lot and share a significant amount of your life with.

In my own case, I have long turned to some form of steel  Rolex Oyster Perpetual for this niche; with their highly water-resistant characteristics and massively built, easily serviceable manufacture movements, these sports watch classics have performed very well, and still do. I’ve swam in rivers and the ocean, hiked, skated and ran with them on, fallen on them, shot heavily recoiling firearms and more, and they have remained perfectly precise. While I greatly respect their utterly reliable performance, they somewhat lack the intangible appeal of the exotic which makes fine watches so tantalizing: it seems as if everyone has a Rolex these days, and despite my considerable admiration for the brand’s rich history and achievements, the 5-point crown lately skates perilously close to being a cliche luxury item. While I don’t plan on getting rid of either of the two I alternate between, I have been thinking of watches which might fulfill the same mission, yet fly better beneath the radar. Anyone who has read my previous entries, knows of my love for the AP Royal Oak  15300; unfortunately, while I do wear that watch a great deal, it is not, nor can it ever be, a true “beater” to me—it is too pretty, and ruining its flawlessly finished metal surfaces would all but amount to a crime; servicing costs are frighteningly prohibitive, too.  The bottom line is, that while I adore it, it’s kind of like dating a pageant queen: I can’t swim, shoot, hike, camp, or do any of the other active things I like to do when wearing it, which sadly removes it from the possibility of being a true grit companion watch.

So, lately I’ve been mulling over what watch WOULD be good for the luxury beater. Excellent choices that spring to mind include the Girard-Perregaux Sea-Hawk II and Sea Hawk II Pro. Water resistant to 300 meters, and a whopping 3000 meters, respectively, these two rugged sport watches combine a distinctly elegant look, with a manufacture-made movement; they even feature a nice complication to boot—the power reserve indication. Another candidate might be the new Corum Admiral’s Cup Competition; it is extremely water resistant, stylishly casual, and tough, on a great looking rubber strap with the coolest looking tang buckle I’ve ever seen. Audemars Piguet’s glandular Royal Oak–the Offshore–would be a fantastic choice too, but again, I don’t know that I have the heart to take life out on its characteristic flawless finish. Too, that is one expensive mother to be risking in the field–and that’s not even considering the 1K plus tariff for a movement overhaul and service. Then there is Kobold, an unquestioningly durable watch (pick any model in the Soarway lineup) which is certainly very exclusive in its production and visibility, and, as if that weren’t enough—headed by one of the nicest guys in the business.

As tasty as these and many other choices are, I think that an  IWC will shortly join my honored league of companion watches; I’ve been thinking about getting one for quite awhile. I admire many of the selections in their lineup, and appreciate the clean, minimalist, masculine ethic embodied in the brand–in everything from the classic Pilot watches, to the  Aquatimer . These watches appeal to me for the same reason I have always been drawn to some of the historically important Rolex models—but with the advantage of freedom from the weird hype that often surrounds that most famous of brands. That’s why I think my next watch will be the  IWC Ingenieur Automatic . It boasts a great historical lineage, impressive technical specifications, and an IWC manufacture movement built expressly for hard use. Sounds like a home run for me—massively built inside and out, and highly resistant to water and shocks, I am confident this piece will be a fantastic partner that I don’t have to baby.  At the same time, and of significance to me at this fork in the road—I know it’s something that won’t be on every other arm.

I guess you could say I have a sentimental place in my heart for the “daily beaters”— the watches that go with me through life, when the others stay locked up for safekeeping, and the last watch (or watches) I would ever give up. We all should have at least one luxury watch that we aren’t hesitant to wear at any time.  You don’t have to rely on a Casio G-Shock or the Timex Triathlon: put on a real watch–a mechanical watch—and celebrate each scratch and ding. The only danger is, you just might become so attached to this watch, that your other more pampered watches begin to lose wrist time!

What’s up with Hearts On Fire Diamonds?

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

ryan-9-6-blog.jpg Now that we have brought on the Hearts On Fire  brand in both our retail stores and onto our website, we are getting a lot of calls and emails regarding these gorgeous diamonds.  I thought I’d take a little time to talk about the uniqueness of Hearts On Fire  diamonds and jewelry.

Hearts On Fire has developed a diamond cut which is based on a modern round brilliant diamond cut with 58 facets.  The philosophy behind their diamond manufacturing is simple: cut is the most important aspect in determining the beauty of a diamond.  Working off of this philosophy, Hearts On Fire has gone to unprecedented lengths to ensure that each and every diamond they sell is cut to extreme standards of perfection.

Each Hearts On Fire diamond is cut and analyzed at 100x magnification using digital imaging technology and micro-precision templates which allow their cutters to achieve a level of precise polish and symmetry which far exceeds the industry standard.  Along with this, Hearts On Fire has developed unique “vibration free” cutting wheels (powered by Rolls Royce engines) which further aid in their ability to achieve facets which are precisely polished and aligned.

In order to produce “The World’s Most Perfectly Cut Diamond,” Hearts On Fire uses only “knot-free crystals.”  Diamond material is similar to wood in that it has a natural grain, which can contain knots.  It is estimated that less than 1% off all rough diamond crystals are “knot free.”

Hearts On Fire diamonds are all hand-crafted by skilled master diamond cutters using state-of-the-art tools and measuring devices.  The end result of all this hard work and analysis is a diamond cut which displays a staggering amount of “fire” and “brilliance.”  All 7 colors of the prism are displayed, and the effect turning the diamond in your hand is similar to a spinning disco ball!

If you are searching for “The World’s Most Perfectly Cut Diamond,” then look no further.  These diamonds represent the pinnacle of diamond cutting, and each Hearts on Fire diamond, whether it is a 5 carat diamond or a .02 carat diamond is cut to the same exacting standard of perfection.

Musicians and the Watches They Love

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

john-legend2.jpg One of the great things about artists who are able strike it rich with their craft is that they become huge patrons of other artist’s work. I think artists may just be wired that way. They appreciate quality and craftsmanship more then the average Joe does.

When it comes to buying things one would consider “art”, rich musicians can sometimes be some of the most voracious consumers.

That said, I decided this week I will talk about what watches some popular musicians are wearing, so here goes…

This last month at the Virgin Megastore in Time Square, Andre Benjamin (AKA Andre 3000) from Outkast was signing new “Idlwild” CD’s. While chillin with his partner in crime, Big Boi, Andre was spotted wearing a Ikepod watch. This is a very cool fashion forward watch that is unfortunately no longer in production. You do see a few of them on ebay from time to time if you would like to see what they look like.

The singer Seal also tends to “get a little crazy” at the watch shops too. A few months ago he was spotted with his supermodel wife Heidi Klum shopping for their newborn child. While loading some super-sized stuffed animals into the car, Seal was photographed wearing a Panerai Marina . A super stylish watch for a super-stylish musician.

Another big Panerai guy is John Mayer who performed on the “Today Show” wearing an oversized Panerai . It seems that John is a bit of a collector because if you watch his DVD “Any Given Thursday” you will notice that he is wearing an IWC Big Pilot which sticks out like a sore thumb on his small wrist.

At the MTV Music Awards a few weeks ago one of my favorite singers John Legend was wearing one of my favorite watches. With a nice white suit, Mr. Legend sported an Audemars Piguet Edward Piguet Chronograph in rose gold.

Then came Kanye West……..

Kanye walked into the MTV Music Awards like he owned the place. As he walked in with his entourage, he was photographed wearing an Audemars Piguet End of Days watch. This is one of Audemars Piguet’s most sought after watches for the hard core Offshore enthusiasts. This limited edition beauty can set you back a healthy 20-30K if it in mint condition.

Country musicians have always been categorized as having more simpler needs then the rest of us city folks. But just because you sing sad songs about your dog dying and you pickup getting repossessed doesn’t mean you can’t throw down for a nice watch when you are in need of some retail therapy. A few weeks ago at the MSN-In Style cocktail party, Natalie Maines of the “Bush Hating” Dixie Chicks was seen wearing a sporty new Chanel J-12 watch. She was photographed with her bandmates Emily Robinson and Martie Maguire.

Even high profile musican’s assistants are getting in the game. Everyone’s Favorite personal assistant Fonzworth Bentley was spotted getting down at DJ Cassidy’s 25th birthday party. At the party, he was photgraphed wearing a stainless steel Corum Admirals Cup watch.

Jeez, Can some musician please hire me to be their personal assistant? I can order food and hold umbrellas real well.
