Weighty Issues? How Much Does Your Wristwatch Weigh?

capeland-s.jpgHave you ever taken your watch off and weighed it?

With the ever increasing size of watches these days they are getting to be pretty heavy. My Breitling Chrono Cockpit on a leather strap with a deployment buckle is just shy of a quarter pound So, I thought I would do a check around the store and see who has the heaviest watches.

• Stainless steel Roger Dubuis AquaMare  on a rubber strap with a deployment buckle which weighs in at 5.4oz.
• Breitling Bentley Motors on a steel Speed Bracelet weighing a whopping 7.4oz.
• Stainless steel Baume & Mercier Hampton Milleis  with diamonds coming in at 1.8oz.
• Baume & Mercier Hampton, but this one is the Classic in 18k yellow gold with diamonds. It weighs 1.9oz.
•  Rolex steel and gold Lady Datejust on a jubilee bracelet-2.0oz
• Roger Dubuis Easydiver in Stainless Steel with a white gold bezel on rubber strap with a deployment buckle – 7.0oz

So as you can see in this small sampling we have a couple of watches that weigh nearly half a pound! We may need to start a new category for watches on the site….Fitness tools!

If you a looking to shed some of the weight on your arm you would do well to consider the IWC Aquatimer in Titanium or the Omega Seamaster Diver 300m Chronograph or the Baume &  Mercier Capeland S #8220. These watches still are pretty big in but don’t weigh you down.

How much does your watch weigh? Do you mind if it heavy? Let me know…maybe I’ll send you a prized Lussori baseball cap!

I find that the weight of the watch makes a difference depending on the size of yuor wrist. I have a small wrist so it makes it difficult to keep the larger watches from rotating on my wrist. I reccomend a leather strap that you can really tighten down.

Good point. Another thing to consider—have you noticed how two watches of the same diameter and comparable weight (but of completely different design and/or manufacturer) can wear so completely differently? Things like bracelet taper, weight of case to bracelet ratio and the relationship between the height and diameter can be huge contributors—-as well as differences between each person’s wrist, or even the difference between an individuals left and right wrist! (i.e. a watch wears more comfortably on one arm than the other)

Experimentation can go a long way toward finding a watch of the size that you like that is pleasant to wear.

Does Baume Mercier make a dive watch? Is the Baume Mercier Hampton a good sports watch?

I tried on the Omega Seamaster and the IWC Aquatimer and the Aquatimer seemed lighter. Which one is more durable the Omega Seamaster or the IWC Aquatimer?

Thank you both for your comments. Both of you make very good points. Bill,I think with a leather strap, a deployment buckle helps with the turning issue. Adam, you are so right! There is a big difference in between say a DeWitt Academia and a Jaquet Droz Grande Seconds and they are both large diameter cases. Or what about the Bvlgari Assioma Chronograph and the Girard Perregaux Vintage XXL Chronograph…both are “tank” shaped but and huge but feel quite different when they are on the wrist.

Ned, Baume and Mercier does make a dive watch in their Capeland S series. Check out model #’s 8124 & 8125. Both are water resistant to 200m. They also make chronograph versions that are also water resistant to 200m, but remember, you cannot use the chronograph function under water. (Model #’s 8329, 8502, 8402, & 8220). The Hampton watches IMHO lean to the dressier or more business-like side. Baume & Mercier did however introduce a new Hampton Classic that is less rectangular and more on the square side. The shape gives it a decidedly sporty look, especially the chronograph. (model#’s 8676, 8605 & 8608). The Hampton line is water resistant to 50m.

Bill, The Omega Seamaster and the IWC Aquatimer are both very rugged watches. Both are dive watches and best sellers for us in the sports watch category Is it possible that the Aquatimer you tried on was Titanium? It is available in both stainless steel and titanium.

Bill, Sandy is spot on when she states that the Omega Seamaster Professional and the IWC Aquatimer are both extremely rugged. Water resistance does not necessarily equate with durability, per se, BUT generally speaking, the more resistant the case is to strong water pressure, the more metal there is surrounding the movement—and THIS may give you more theoretical “durability”. In this regard, it’s pretty hard to top the IWC Aquatimer 2000, which is IWC’s deepest rated dive watch, at 2000 meters/6,600 feet. Pretty strong watch! (Not that the Omega is a slouch–it’s rated at 300m/1000ft. for the standard model, and 610m/2000ft. for the Planet Ocean)
Ultimately, either the Omega or IWC models you mention would serve you very well for a strong, durable and reliable watch. Pick the one you like best!

can i get a cool watch that looks big but is not heavy. Should I look at an IWC or an Omega? I heard that the IWC Aquatimer is lighter than the Omega seamaster. is this true?

Comment by Susie C. 09.21.06 @ 5:13 am

It depends on the model and configuration, Susie. The IWC Aquatimer 2000 will likely be lighter than the Omega Seamaster chrono Diver in titanium, assuming both have bracelets, but the IWC will probably be a tad (very slightly) heavier than the basic 300-meter rated Seamaster Professional Chronometer watch (non chronograph), as it is thicker due to the much greater water resistance rating.

Hope this helps!

i want to buy a ladies sport watch. my friend has the Tag Heuer Link watch. is this a good every day watch? does the Tag Heuer link come in different dial colors?

Comment by Madeline 09.24.06 @ 3:32 pm

i want to get an Omega Planet Ocean watch but am concerned that the orange dial is to flashy. does Omega make another Seamaster watch for ladies that has a white dial?

Comment by Emily 09.24.06 @ 3:35 pm

how do i weigh my Omega Speedmaster watch? i am curious to see how heavy it is…also does the weight of the watch cause wrist injuries like using a keyboard?

Comment by Maddy 09.24.06 @ 3:52 pm

Madeline,

The TAG-Heuer Link is an outstanding daily wear watch, being both extremely tough and highly water-resistant; it is in fact, a dive watch, and can be used for intensive water exposure use. Dial colors include various mother of pearl variations, including pink, white and black (MOP), as well as more conventional black (non-mother of pearl). In any version, you will be well served. :)

are there any watch brands liek Audemars Piguet or Roger Dubuis that make big watches like the Royal Oak that are not heavy? like in a different material?

Comment by Tony 10.05.06 @ 2:54 pm

Tony, I highly recommend the IWC Ingenieur AMG, in either the chronograph or automatic versions. At 42-mm diameter, and over 15-mm thick, this watch has substance. Yet, being in titanium, it is lightweight and extremely comfortable to wear–so comfortable, you can almost forget it is there.

Don’t forget, also, that the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore is available in a titanium version—-if you love the AP ROO, but want it light, theres no reason to settle for anything else! It’s got all the appeal of the steel Offshore, with hardly any of the weight. Check it out! :)
