The Influence of John Mayer…

Monday, March 19th, 2007

jessica-simpson.jpg As we all know John Mayer is a huge watch geek. He is definately a collector and doesn’t minda talking about. If you read his blog you will see that he is a huge fan of IWC, Panerai and Rolex .

It is common knowledge that once you start dating someone, you start to taking on some of his or her hobbies and interests over a period of time. This seems to be the case with John Mayer and his latest flame Jessica Simpson .

Once he started dating Jessica, the blonde pop-tart dyed her hair brown and started wearing cool watches. Last week they were photographed together coming out of a restaurant in LA and she was photographed sporting a strapping new “Kermit” Submariner.

Nice purchase John!

The New Daniel JeanRichard 2 TimeZones Watch: A Great Companion for Travelers

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

final-djr-gmt.jpg Lovers of GMT/UTC and dual-time watches, take note. Daniel JeanRichard has introduced a very nice new model at SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie) this year, that has all the makings of an outstanding timepiece for travelers. The 2TimeZones watch, as it is called, demonstrates the commitment of Daniel JeanRichard to expanding their awareness amongst buyers of luxury timepieces, and broadening their scope as a watch Manufacturer which intends to be taken seriously.

Daniel JeanRichard has come a long way in the last several years, having joined the ranks of true Manufacturers by introducing a new in-house movement. They have also shown their prowess in the realm of haute horlogerie by showing us some exquisite complications, including both a tourbillon and a very beautiful minute-repeater watch . The new Daniel JeanRichard 2TimeZones watch will be introduced in stainless steel, and will use the case style of the Chronoscope watch collection. This new timepiece has a very appealing black dial with a large luminous Arabic “12″ at the top and eleven luminous stick markers fenced in with metal surrounds; in all, it looks like a very fine balance between sportiness and a classic look that should stand the test of time; the well-defined hour and minute hands have plenty of Superluminova, meaning that this watch should be outstanding in conditions of less than optimal light. I’m particularly fond of the way the red accents by the minute hashmarks coordinate with the red numbers of the date wheel and the text for the model inscription.

Naturally, the Daniel JeanRichard 2TimeZones watch will feature the use of the Manufacture JR1000 caliber. In this case, Daniel JeanRichard has elaborated this movement to give it several very useful aspects. One will note the two opposing crowns on each side of the watch: the usual one, at 3 o’clock is responsible for the winding of the watch, and setting the time and date; this crown also enables the setting of the window indicator at the top of the dial, that shows the hour of a second time zone. What then is the second crown for? Well, instead of controlling an inner-bezel as it does with Daniel JeanRichard’s DiverScope watch (which shares a similar case design), this crown moves the disc which shows cities of the world. This allows you to coordinate the hour displayed in the second time zone indicator with a location of your choosing(wherever home is/was, for example). Since an hour hand that is readily movable to show changes in local time is vital on a serious tr
avel watch, Daniel JeanRichard has very intelligently produced an easy mechanism that allows this. On the left side of the case are two buttons integrated into the case, which are responsible for moving the hour hand either forwards or backwards, in one hour jumps. Externally reminiscent of the system Ulysse Nardin employs in their excellent GMT /- Dual Time watches, this rapid-adjustment feature allows the minute and second hand to continue normally. For most, this type of independent adjustment is easier and offers more convenience than one which requires fiddling with a crown.

All in all this new Daniel JeanRichard timepiece looks like a real winner–it has style, an exclusive movement, and it offers a genuinely useful mix of complications. This is one of the most attractive dual-time watches I’ve seen in a long time, and overall, it’s my favorite Daniel JeanRichard watch to date.

Why You Can’t Kidnap Brad Pitt

Friday, March 9th, 2007

brad-pitt.jpg

Lets pretend you are ridiculously famous.

Lets also pretend you were incredibly rich and made 20 million dollars a film.

Now close your eyes and pretend you are the best looking man on the planet and every woman was eager to mate with you (sounds like an after-shave commercial, I know).

Now, because you are the best looking guy on the planet, you get to mate with the best looking girl on the planet (but of course she is slightly nuts).

Welcome to Brad Pitt’s Life

Brad’s life isn’t all sunshine and roses.

Imagine what its like walking through airports around the world - How do you do it when you are that rich and famous? Wouldn’t you feel threatened with all the crazy stalker fans out there.

I know I would.

What would you do to insure some nutter won’t try to kidnap you or your family for ransom?

You lo-jack yourself!

And thats exactly what Brad did. He went out and bought a shiny new Breitling Emergency watch . With a flick of switch (pin), this watch will send out an emergency beacon guaranteeing a seal-team type rescue. Don’t let your kids get a hold of it. If the pin gets accidently pulled and a Navy Seal team shows up on your front door, get ready to fork over $10,000 for that little accident. Ooops!

To check out the big biceps on Brad buy a copy of Interview Magazine this month where he graces the cover with his Breitling Emergency watch .

A Study in Retro Elegance: The Glashutte Original Senator Sixties Watch

Friday, March 9th, 2007

glashutte-senator-sixties.jpg Glashutte Original has just introduced a new watch at this year’s 2007 Baselworld, which I am really looking forward to seeing. This timepiece is called the Senator Sixties watch, and apparently it will be part of a larger collection of watches that share the same classic, retro styling. The “Senator Sixties” moniker, as humorous as it might seem, was not intended to evoke a certain age demographic—rather, it calls to mind the age of the 1960’s when round watches with minimalist dials were offered by many fine companies, a time just before the world of the mechanical watch was totally shaken up by the 1970’s and the quartz revolution. These new Glashutte Original timepieces has really elegant details, and some that are also decidedly retro—for example, the recessed “pie-pan” type dial, which curves at its outer-edge, and also hands which are subtly bent at their tips, toward this curved dial edge. These are both very nice details, which few manufacturers bother to go to the trouble to reproduce in their lineups of more dressy or classical watches. Another aspect which Glashutte Original  has captured with this watch is the relative relationship of the dial to the case; with this Senator Sixties watch, Glashutte has produced a very subtle, minimalist case (compared to the regular Senator watch collection) which results in the dial being that much more emphasized as a result. And, with a dial as elegant as this one, complete with very distinctive, yet appealing Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9, alternated with svelte “stick” hour indexes, you will be very hard-pressed not to want to look at it, even when you don’t really need to know what time it is.

Glashutte Original will apparently offer the Senator Sixties watches in both stainless steel and 18K rose gold, with silver or anthracite dials. I have not yet seen a picture of the rose gold versions, but the stainless steel watch looks great in the photograph (meaning that it should look much better in the metal!). An aspect of the stainless steel version that I find particularly nice is the gold-plated hands and stick hour markers; this makes for a subtle and attractive contrast that is really aesthetically satisfying. Glashutte Original has chosen to use their proven and excellent Caliber 39 movement for this timepiece, rather than the newer Caliber 100. To me this makes sense, in that the Caliber 39 has quite a long and impressive history as a Glashutte automatic-winding caliber, and that somehow seems appropriate for a watch which evokes a retro feel. In addition, the Caliber 39 still offers excellent timekeeping performance, and it is also very pretty, with its 21-K gold segmented rotor, polished swan-neck spring, and rich Glashutte decorations.

Fortunately to many, Glashutte Original will concede to modern tastes in a couple of regards with the Senator Sixties watches. First of all, this watch won’t feature a smallish 34-35mm case, as was the fashion with watches made 40 years ago; this watch will have a 39-40mm case. Also of note, the watch will have an exhibition sapphire caseback instead of a solid one, so that the pretty movement doesn’t have to stay hidden from view. All in all, I doubt this new Glashutte Original watch will excite those who want to stay on the cutting edge of fashion, or who prefer watches that can be submerged hundreds of meters below the sea (this one is only water-resistant to 30 meters.) However, it should be very appealing to those watch fans who are looking for a really nicely detailed mechanical timepiece that offers horological value, a fine movement, and unpretentious elegance.

Al Sharpton Rocks Bvlgari

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

al-sharpton-bulgari.jpg This story is a little strange. A few months ago some folks asked the good reverend Al Sharpton if he wanted to participate in a genealogy study. Reverend Sharpton thought it was an interesting idea and told them to go forward with little idea of what would become of it.

The results were shocking. It turns out that Al Sharpton’s great grandaddy Coleman Sharpton was a slave owned by none other than Strom Thurmond’s great great grandfather. Talk about strange coincidences. The reverend said it was “the most shocking thing of my life”.

I had read this news story before but overlooked the photo. My good buddy Steve at Lussori sent me the link last week and I realized what I missed. If you look closely, you will see that the good reverend has great taste when it comes to his timepieces. In this photo, you will see a Bvlgari Ergon watch on his left hand. Great choice Reverend Sharpton!

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Chronograph

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

alinghi.jpgOk, Audemars Piguet fans, and Royal Oak/Royal Oak Offshore watch fans in particular—get ready for the huge rush surrounding the wild new Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Chronograph . With this one, Audemars Piguet has, in my opinion, created a sensation that will take its place amongst such Royal Oak watch legends as the T3, the Royal Oak “End of Days” chronograph, and the Royal Oak Offshore Juan Pablo Montoya Chronograph watch.

When I saw the press on this new Audemars Piguet watch yesterday (for the first time) I wasn’t sure what to think—a watch with a case manufactured completely from forged carbon fiber? Wild…proudly un-traditional…provocative. In truth, I wasn’t sure if I liked it or disliked it, so I decided to step away from it for a bit. This morning, I logged on and decided to take a second look–there is no question that my appreciation is much greater! The thing is growing on me, and I have to admit, this is one super-cool watch which is really fresh and distinctive. Following up a tradition of a series of limited edition Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore watches for the Alinghi sailing team , Audemars Piguet really pulled out the stops to create a watch engineered specifically for the sailors to wear. Since the America’s Cup race places such a premium on lightweight technology, and carbon fiber in particular for the construction of the vessel, this same material was a natural choice for the designers to focus on to create an entirely new Royal Oak watchcase. For one, it provides a tangible connection to the construction of the Alinghi yacht. Secondly, it allows for an exceptionally large, visible sports watch which is amazingly light (at 100 grams) andresistant to environmental ravages. Thirdly, (and perhaps most importantly for most of us landlubbers), it demonstrates the capabilities of Audemars Piguet in creating amazing things out of carbon fiber. Audemars Piguet has been intensely developing their advanced carbon fiber manufacturing processes and refining them greatly, which is why we have seen even movements being made out of the substance, with the example of the incredible Millenary MC-12 Tourbillon watch. Viewed in that light, this new case made entirely from carbon fiber is a logical evolution of AP’s research and development, and it is extremely cool, I might add! Add to this the super-slick ceramic chronograph pushers, the blackened hexagonal bezel screws and magnificently detailed dial, not to mention the technical appeal of the flyback chronograph and regatta countdown function, and its easy to see why this new Audemars Piguet watch is already creating a massive stir amongst the ranks of salivating Watch Idiot Savants.

Audemars Piguet is offering the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Chronograph watch in both 18K rose gold and platinum, complete with a carbon fiber bezels on both. Despite the smaller editions of these two versions in precious metals, I predict that neither of these models–attractive though they are–will have the resonating appeal of the basic carbon fiber model. The 100% carbon fiber case MAKES this watch special–having just a bezel made from the material is not going to satisfy in the same way. Traditionalists may disagree, but then again, these watches are not really aimed at traditionalists to begin with. From the beginning, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watch was provocative, and throughout the years, the design has continued to evolve, pushing the boundaries in a luxury sports timepiece. Before the Panerai-fever, before the Hublot “Big Bang” and other in-your-face sports watches, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore platform really got the large sports watch craze kicked into high gear, much the same way as the original Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch came to represent a new design concept for exclusive horological luxury back in the 1970’s. I think that’s the nutshell reason that the Royal Oak/Royal Oak Offshore watches continue to electrify watch lovers so much—the basic design is so versatile, it seems there is little limit to what it can express, from elegance, to mechanical virtuosity, to cutting edge sportiness.

So, my hat is off to Audemars Piguet. They have succeeded yet again in creating another cult Royal Oak Offshore timepiece. I only hope I can get a chance to handle one of these amazing new creations (the carbon fiber version, naturally!) before they are all spoken for. I’m not going to stake my life on that, though—these watches are going to be gone in the blink of an eye.
