Approximate 90-95% of all jewelry quality sapphire material is heat treated for color enhancement. This type of heat treatment has been performed on gemstones for over 4,000 years. However, as a rule, Kashmir sapphires do not receive treatment of any kind. Furthermore, these gems are usually presented with certification paperwork from a gemstone grading laboratory such as Gueblin or the AGL verifying that they are natural unheated sapphires.

Due to the gorgeous natural color of these gemstones and their extreme rarity, Kashmir Sapphires generally sell for prices far beyond those of sapphires from other locales. A 10 carat Kashmir sapphire may sell for approximately $50,000 per carat while a 20 carat specimen will probably sell for over $100,000 per carat. In recent weeks, a new record was set when a 22.66 carat Kashmir sapphire was sold at auction through Christie’s for $3,064,000.00 (over $135,000 per carat).
