Michael Bolton Gets a little Le Coultre’d

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

michael-bolton-watch.jpgThis grammy award winning crooner - was as famous for his soft rock ballads as he was his signature “Kentucky Waterfall” hairstyle. Believe it or not, he was actually one of the most prolific songwriters of his time penning such hits as “How am I Supposed to Live Without You”, “Gloria”, and “I Found Someone” made famous by Cher. Ironically one of Michael Bolton’s most successful hits, “Sittin On the Dock on the Bay” was a song that he didn’t even write.

Early in his career, Bolton spent a lot of time dating Nicollette Sheridan, a stunning young seductress from Knots Landing who basically stole hearts and cause general trouble. The two broke up and went their separate ways.

These days Michael Bolton has ditched the Mullett, but is once again dating Nicollette Sheridan - who no longer plays a young seductress who steals hearts and causes trouble. Sheridan now plays an older “cougar-like” seductress who steals hearts and causes trouble on the hit tv show “Desperate Housewives”. She also changed her address from Seaview Circle to Wisteria Lane.

Bolton is also doing a lot of charity work serving as the a board member for the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, National Mentoring Partnership as well as the self titled Michael Bolton Foundation. In 1999 the name “Michael Bolton” was a-buzz once once again due to the movie “Office Space” which had a character who shared the same name, but not similar success vocationally or romantically speaking.

The Real Michael Bolton doesn’t live in a cube-based world as the character in the movie “Office Space”. He lives in Los Angeles - has 3 kids and lives a quiet but charmed life. You can tell by his choice in timepieces. If you look closely you will see that Michael Bolton is wearing a [/tag]Jaeger-LeCoultre[/tag] Perpetual Calendar watch.

Nice choice Mr. Bolton!

Pharrell Williams Goes Deep with Audemars Piguet

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Pharrell-Audemars-Piguet-concept-2.jpgAt the tender age of 34 - this producer, rapper, singer and songwriter has the world eating out of his hand. In his young 34 years, Pharrell Williams has won 3 Grammy’s, was named Producer of the Year, and has worked with some of the biggest names in music such as Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Gwen Stefani. He just seems to have the Midas Touch when it comes to producing popular music. So much so - that in 2003 a radio station survey found that 43% of all music played on the radio that year was produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo from the Neptunes.

Pharrell seems to have his own sense of style. In 2005 Esquire Magazine named him the “Best Dressed Man in the World” even though he is usually seen wearing a trucker hat and duds from one of his two clothing companies “Billionaire Boys Club” and “Ice Cream Footwear”.

At least when it comes to timepieces, Pharrell doesn’t play around. He is usually seen wearing a Royal Oak Offshore but in this photo he is wearing the phenomenal Audemars Piguet Concept watch, one of the most exclusive and complicated ultra-luxury sports watches ever made.

Glashutte Original: Watch Buying Deja Vu

Monday, September 24th, 2007

22-02-52-51-04_00.jpgIt’s strange how often watch obsessed people repeat their buying preferences over and over again.  There are the guys who proudly show off their collection of say, dive watches, often by the same brand, and announce that they are going to add another watch to the collection—turns out it’s going to be another dive watch.  Then there are those who are dedicated to a certain brand—Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Panerai, Rolex, or whatever–and never venture from that brand.  The most perplexing cases are guys (and girls) who purchase the same watch MODEL in several metals, or even better, buy a certain watch model, end up selling it, and then re-buying it, not once, not even twice, but three times…or more.

I’m really no different, and maybe I’m getting even more set in my ways as I go on.  My usual pattern is, must be round, preferably in a white metal, and have a movement made by the manufacturer whose name is on the dial.  I doubt I’ll probably stray from the last stipulation, but I hope to maybe branch out and get something non-round at some point, just to shake things up a little bit—-who knows, maybe even in pink or yellow gold for added measure?  Why not…somewhere down the road, at least.

This humorous reality been on my mind, because I’ve found myself increasingly interested in the Glashutte Original Karree Panorama Date Manual Winding watch.  Like my other watch loves, this piece is “Manufacture”, but unlike any of my currently owned watches, its not round, but instead a very attractive tonneau shape.  My triple takes on this timepiece are also probably induced by my recent adulatory experience with Glashutte’s magnificent Karree Tourbillon, which I told you all about in my last post (and shares the same basic case design with the Karree Panorama Date watch).

As an additional plus, this new Glashutte Original timepiece has a newly-designed manually wound movement, which would also give me something I’ve never had the chance to own before—a movement that isn’t automatic winding.  I mean, even the MOVEMENT isn’t round—its a shaped movement, which is specifically designed for the non-round watchcase. Oh, the madness of watches, I tell you.  Hmmmm…..decisions, decisions!

Bruce Springsteen Maybe Born in the USA - But His Watch Was Made in Switzerland

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

le-boss.jpg Last week “The Boss” (AKA Bruce Springsteen) was headed into The David Letterman show with his favorite red-headed accessory in tow. As Bruce Springsteen and Patty walked in, I couldn’t help but notice their coordinating outfits. Bruce was wearing a black button down shirt, black jeans, black boots and black sunglasses. Not to be out-done, his carrot-top bride was wearing a black top, black jeans, black boots, black scarf and black sunglasses - accessorized with a coordinating black purse (Damn that is a lot of black).

The weird thing is…I know for a fact that it was 80 degrees in New York City that day - with about 90% humidity… Where were Bruce and Patti going? To a Depeche Mode concert, maybe?

Even if they were, at least Bruce was wearing a very cool watch that matches his monochromatic Ozz-Fest look. If you look closely you will see Springsteen’s watch of choice is a Bell & Ross 126 XL. This is no surprise since Bell & Ross is shaping up to be “The New Panerai” (I can already feel the flaming emails coming from all the Panerai fans) with their ultra hip and funky Instrument collection. I guess Bruce is on the tip when it comes to watch fashion.. Who knew?

Art Deco Diamond Bracelets

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

MCT_f6129-1_Z.jpgThe diamond bracelet trend these days  is definitely towards a big look. In fact, many of today’s most fashionable celebs are wearing big stacks of bracelets. If you’d like to get in on the big diamond bracelet trend, check out some of our super cool Art Deco diamond bracelets. We have a number of unique and gorgeous pieces that feature diamonds set in platinum. Some of these designs also feature other gemstones such emeralds, sapphires, pearls, and rubies for a splash of color that you can coordinate with the rest of your outfit.

The most exciting thing about these bracelets is that they are vintage and totally individual. In most cases, your chance of coming across someone wearing the same design is zero! And though these designs vary in width, they all have a BIG look. It’s really just a question of how big you really want to go! Also, these bracelets are surprisingly versatile now – clearly appropriate for formal events – these designs are so fashionable these days that they can be worn with nearly anything.

Best Of Class: My Favorite Fine Timepieces From Carshow 2007

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

IMG_2614.jpg Without question, the best time to pay a visit to the Lussori showroom, is in the month of August—specifically, mid-August. Amidst all the festivities and fantastic exotic cars you will find there a selection of timepieces that will blow your eyes, your mind, and possibly–your wallet—if “watch fever” eliminates the constraints of fiscal responsibility. While a month has gone by since this year’s festivities have come and gone, the memories of my favorite timepieces continue to happily linger.

The Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Grande Complication watch was absolutely phenomenal, and my personal favorite this year.  While I have often stated that, as a rule, I prefer simple watches, I can in perfect conscience break from my usual view and declare this watch as something I WOULD have, were I so financially able.  The example we had was in platinum, and you would have to search far and wide to find a half-million dollar-plus watch with more understatement and exceptional refinement.  No one, and I mean no-one, outside of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of human beings, would have any idea of this watch’s value ( a good thing!) while the owner can quietly enjoy what is certainly one of the most beautiful examples of haute horlogerie made in the world today.

AP_25866PT00D002CR02_00[1].jpgThe stats of the Audemars Piguet Grande Complication watch have always impressed me—654 hand-finished parts uniting to control a minute repeater, a perpetual calendar with moon phases, and a split-seconds chronograph—-but looking into that caseback, and SEEING this perfectly finished microcosm was something else entirely.  Absolute aesthetic harmony rules here, and each detail is lavished with the finest degree of traditional finish—from the massive, engraved 22K gold rotor (personalizable with the owners initials, upon request) to the remarkable architecture of the very deeply constructed and extremely complex mechanism.  The minute repeater was outstanding, with an excellent tone and volume (particularly delightful considering the platinum case) and I made sure to enjoy the chimes several times before this watch went “home” to Audemars Piguet.

un_746-88_00[1].jpgUlysse Nardin was also well represented this year, and it was a real treat to be able to finally hold in my hand and experience the Circus Minute Repeater.  I’d had a chance to view some really fantastic closeups of this watch’s dial taken by gifted photographers, and my own viewing of the watch confirmed the impression the photos left me with.  The animated dial is superb—and I commend the master craftsmen at Ulysse Nardin for creating such an amazing work of art.  To be able to chime this minute repeater and see “the show” was certainly memorable, and I will place this watch as a close second behind another Ulysse Nardin watch which I saw the year before–the Jungle Minute Repeater, which happens to be my all time favorite Ulysse Nardin Complication watch.

43-01-12-12-04_00[1].jpgThe Glashutte Original Karree Tourbillon watch kept me coming back to the [tag]Glashutte[tag] counter over and over again.  As many of you know, the last year or two has witnessed a market explosion of tourbillon watches, some extremely fine, with others being decidely more mediocre.  Well, I am happy to state that the Karree Tourbillon watch is one of the most beautiful tourbillons I’ve had the opportunity to see.  At the apex of the beautiful silver dial with a fine sun-ray guilloche pattern, is a breathtaking “flying” tourbillon, crafted according to the construction of famed German horologist, Alfred Helwig.  This tourbillon, perhaps more than any other I have observed, really gives you a sense of the remarkable mechanical intricacy and delicate construction that the tourbillon is famous for:  Softly pulsing as it completed its minute revolutions, I found myself truly entranced.  This watch had plenty to offer from the back side as well—the hand-wound Glashutte Original Caliber 43 movement displays hand-engraved bridges, jewels mounted in screwed-in gold chatons, and a delightful little suprise that you don’t notice right away—a tiny engraving of a watchmaker intently working at his bench!  In its perfectly sized platinum case, the Karree Tourbillon sat beautifully on the wrist, and like the Audemars Piguet Grande Complication, exuded refined understatement and modesty all out of proportion to its rarity and value–a perfect 10 in my book.

Furrer-Jacot Wedding Bands

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

furr-jaq.jpg It’s a fairly easy case to make that your wedding band is the single most important piece of jewelry that you will ever own.  It may not be the most expensive, and it’s probably not the showiest piece in your collection.  However, you will wear it more than any other jewelry piece, and more importantly, it’s a symbol for one of the most significant changes in your life.

When you look at it from this perspective, don’t you think that your wedding band should be something special?  I mean, the ring that you wear to signify your devotion to the one true love of your life shouldn’t be an afterthought, or even something run-of-the-mill – it should be something spectacular and significant.  That’s not to say that you need to have something flashy, gaudy, or otherwise obnoxious, . . . it just means that your wedding band ought to be something special and meaningful to you.

This is where Furrer-Jacot comes in.  All of Furrer-Jacot’s rings are crafted using a combination of the latest precision technology and old world hand-craftsmanship.  Their metal alloys are pure and luxurious, their designs are impeccable and stylish, and the finished product is truly exquisite.  Beyond this, Furrer-Jacot is known the world over for their incredible engraving.  They are even able to engrave a message in your own handwriting!

If you’re searching for the perfect wedding band – something you will treasure for the rest of your days – then take a look at our collection of Furrer-Jacot wedding bands.  I’m sure you will find what you have been looking for.

The GMT watch: A popular and practical complication for the real world

Friday, September 7th, 2007

quad.jpgOf all the watches which have complications (anything beyond the function of telling the time) my favorites are those which display one or more timezones. Unlike certain complications, such as the tourbillon or the minute repeater whose primary appeal is their beauty and/or complexity, the GMT/UTC/dual time watch has truly useful everyday appeal. Do you travel for business, or pleasure? Have friends, family, or business contacts on another continent, or even just across the one you live on? If so, you will really appreciate owning a fine watch with multiple time zone displays. I thought I’d take a moment to highlight just a few of my favorites.

The Ulysse Nardin GMT ± Big Date watch collection is a real standout in this category. Offered in several formats, these Ulysse Nardin watches offer probably the easiest operation of any dual-time watch. A small window with a “Home Time” inscription shows off a numerical hour layout in a 24-hour format–often, owners set this display for the time in the place in which they live, although it can also be set to indicate GMT/UTC–the standard reference time that is used by pilots and other navigators. Meanwhile, the two buttons on the left side of the case permit you to flip the hour hand either forwards or backwards, as you move through various time zones. Since the minutes and seconds operate normally for this operation, there’s no need to reset the watch. You don’t even unscrew the crown—yep, just push either the top button (marked with a symbol) or the bottom button (marked with a - symbol) and the hour hand can be quickly set to your new destination. It just does n’t get any easier than that. On top of the cool dual time function, you also have the very neat Ulysse Nardin big date display, which can be advanced quickly, even in the reverse direction, something that is verboten with many watches. In addition to the classical round styles, Ulysse Nardin also offers this supremely useful complication in the Quadrato Dual Time watch if you enjoy your timepieces big and bold. Want the same travel utility, but desire additional complication? Have a look at the Ulysse Nardin GMT ± Perpetual watches—all the same functionality, but with the added appeal of a perpetual calendar complication, complete with a two-digit year indicator.

Blancpain also has some great watches for travellers, particularly if you prefer a more restrained, elegant style. Available in both steel or 18K gold variations in both the Villeret and Leman collections, the Blancpain GMT Time Zone watch has a date display and a crown-set independent hour hand that allows you to easily move through time zones, forward or backwards, while the minute hand and second continue operating normally. A smaller subdial at the top allows you to keep track of the time in another place, while a rotating disc bearing a sun and starry night sky indicate whether the time in the secondary zone is in the AM or PM. The Blancpain Leman Alarm watch is another great choice from this brand, and in addition to the independently-settable hour hand and second time zone indicator, also gives you an alarm function complete with its own power-reserve indicator, and a mechanism that allows you to switch the alarm on or off, at will. Superbly elegant, I honestly can not think of a better timepiece for a travelling business professional whose work requires elegant attire on a regular basis.

How could I forget Audemars Piguet? My own 15300 Royal Oak watch has become a real favorite, so I was delighted when I learned that Audemars Piguet would introduce a new Dual Time watch in this collection; having recently handled the Royal Oak Dual Time watch, I can say that it is everything I hoped it would be. Get this timepiece, and you not only have a real icon of luxury design, complete with the superb detailing that makes the Royal Oak watch unique, but you also get a very useful travelling instrument. In addition to the date display, and a power-reserve indicator, this new Royal Oak watch allows you to rapidly set the hour hand forwards or backwards as you change time zones. A secondary, smaller display shows the time anywhere else you choose, and a day/night indicator makes deciphering day from night in far-away places a simple matter.

If you are looking for travel watch which is uncompromisingly sporty and extremely rugged, the Omega Seamaster GMT watches are ideal candidates. You can advance quickly through timezones with the independent hour hand, while the supplementary 24-hour hand indicates a second time zone via the bezel. If you keep this hand set to GMT time, you can even calculate a third temporary time zone by using the rotating bezel. Built to the same dive-worthy standards as the rest of the Omega Seamaster watch collection, the Seamaster GMT can safely descend to a depth of 300 meters, thanks to its extremely robust case, and screw-down crown and screw-locked case back.

Jewelry: Price Versus Value

Friday, September 7th, 2007

diamondring1.jpg Jewelry is unique in the world of consumer goods for a variety of reasons, but the most important, I believe, is that buying jewelry is all about romance.  Whether it’s an engagement ring signifying the passion of love and commitment or a rare estate jewelry piece representing the history and tradition of jewelry artistry, these items all embody passion and romance.

When a woman looks at a pair of dazzling diamond stud earrings, she doesn’t see a price tag, she sees something indescribably beautiful, which has the power to take her breath away.  This point is often lost on men purchasing gifts for their beloved.  The male approach is generally to gather all the data including technical specs like color and clarity for diamonds, assess the carat weights, metal types, etc, and then hit the internet to figure out what “fair pricing” is for the item they are considering.

This process however, has a very disheartening and tragic effect:  it sucks the romance right out of the purchase.  When a woman sees something and falls in love with it, you can see it in her face.  Men need to realize that when they look down at the price tag of the item, they are looking the wrong direction!  If her face is telling you that she’s in love with something, then your search is over, and as soon as you whip out the credit card, your job is done.  She is happy because she has fallen in love with a beautiful piece of jewelry which is now hers, and you are now happy because,  . . . well because she’s happy, and really, that’s all that matters, isn’t it?

My point here is simple:  There is certainly something to be said for being well informed about proper pricing, but what is much more important is making sure that your gift to her is a token of romance, love and passion, not just a testament to your skills as a haggler.

OK, This is Wierd…

Friday, September 7th, 2007

obamawonder2[1].JPG In my own defense, I was getting pretty psyched about the upcoming Stevie Wonder concert. Its great music and as a matter of fact - “Superstition” was one of the first record I ever purchased. Stevie Wonder is awesome – I probably would rank him as one of the best songwriters of all time.

So I started looking around the internet for my Stevie Wonder concert tickets - since I still had not secured any yet. I went to all the typical places - ebay - stubhub - craigslist -ect and found some I wanted to bid on. I bid on the tickets and was thrilled by the possibility of going to the concert. I will also confess that I love going to concerts and prior to going I generally obsess about the musician or band I am about to go see. This time was no different. As I started my regular obsessive routine I started to do image searches to see how Stevie Wonder has changed through the years…

Thats when it happened.

Like a ton of bricks it hit me!

STEVIE WONDER IS WEARING A WATCH????

What the heck? Why was Stevie wearing a watch? Is it a minute repeater? Ralph Teetor, the gentlemen that invented the cruise control went blind at an early age. He was known to wear a Patek Philippe minute repeater after he lost his vision, so it is a possibility.

Now, I don’t mean to be making a sport of Stevie’s disability, but seeing a blind individual with a watch on is a not an everyday occurrence..

I know I usually report what watches people are wearing and I apologize that I dont have the information now but I do promise to find out.

I’m on the case.
