So the writers strike forges on - and lucky for us, some of America’a greatest B and C- list actors came to show their support for the people that make them funny (Ok, maybe a few came for the photo ops…).

A cornucopia of mid-afternoon thespians graced the entrance to Universal Studios yesterday. The streets were simply littered with beautiful people whom you couldn’t remember the name of - but you knew them from “that show”. Looking at some photos one might think there were more actors there then writers… As a matter of fact there were so many celebrities there you mighta thought you were at “Promises” in Malibu.

Among the supportive entertainers were the “Liquid Terminator Dude” and the “Weather Chaser Guy from Twister” wearing tee-shirts that might be…. a little too tight. Oh ya I think their names are Bill Paxton and Robert Patrick.

Since nearly kicking Arnold’s butt and ending the world in “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”, Robert Patrick has since had a steady flow of rolls playing bad guys in science-fiction films.

Bill Paxton on the other hand has been in his fair share of blockbuster films going all the way back to the original “Terminator” movie.

In this picture - the two men are posing in photo that probably won’t printed in Us Weekly. While it may not be a great tabloid photo - its good for us because it gives us a look into their horological soul…

So what are these tight-shirted action adventure actors wearing on their wrist?

Since naked necks and understated jewelry seems to be the dismal trend in Hollywood these days, I offer my highest compliments and utmost respect to Oprah. While I’m not the biggest devotee of chronographs as a rule, there are a few which really raise my pulse. One of these is the extremely lovely Jaquet Droz Chrono Monopoussoir watch. To me this timepiece succeeds on many levels at once; it’s beautifully made with extremely fine details, demonstrates a very elegant design, and is also a technically impressive example of high grade watchmaking.

As is the case with all Jaquet Droz watches, when you examine the Chrono Monopoussoir you know you are really holding something exotic and unusual. From the smoothly contoured 18K gold case, to the breathtaking dials in enamel or exotic materials (including meteorite and rutile quartz) with their shimmering blued steel hands, this chronograph exudes a classy sense of luxury that is really special. The richly decorated self-winding movement is no less impressive, being based upon the famed column-wheel controlled Frederic Piguet 1185 caliber. But what is particularly noteworthy is the way in which Jaquet Droz has implemented this fine mechanical motor to make it even more impressive—the time display has been given its own subdial, drawing all eyes to that very long, shapely blued steel central chronograph hand. The striking symmetry of the four subdials is also captivating, and quite unlike anything else out there. And of course, there’s the fascination of the “Monopoussoir” (or, “single push”, if you prefer) chronograph, which dispenses with the usual start/stop and return to zero buttons that border the crown on most chronograph watches. This extremely elegant and seldom seen design places re-assigns all chronograph controls to a single inconspicuous little button that is co-axial with the winding crown. A very sophisticated detail, to be sure, and one which makes this watch not even necessarily identifiable as a chronograph, at least at first glance. No doubt about it, this is one chronograph timepiece which is ideal for elegant wear.

Speaking personally, I for one enjoy dress chronographs, precisely because the chronograph complication is so often associated with sports and sport timing; for this reason, many wristwatches with the chronograph function are decidedly casual in appearance. A dressy chronograph watch is a real change of pace, and can be a great addition to a collection–if you enjoy them too, I highly recommend having a close look at the Jaquet Droz Monopoussoir. The only difficult thing may be choosing between the various incredible dials which are offered!

It’s been well covered in the luxury watch press of late how tourbillon-fever has gripped the industry for the last several years. But what trend in complications is likely to come next? Some knowledgeable sources suggest that the minute repeater might be the next choice. In case you might not be familiar with what a minute repeater is, it is in a nutshell a watch which has a highly complicated and intricate mechanism that allows it to indicate the time (hours, quarter hours, and individual minutes) with distinctively tuned chimes. Any time the owner wishes to hear the time struck out, all he or she need do is activate a sliding lever or button, usually found on the side of the case, and presto–you will hear the time.

There’s no question that the minute repeater is a spectacular complication. However, it’s price is also astronomical, and on average considerably higher than the already very expensive tourbillon complication (to say nothing of the cost of servicing a minute repeater, due to the shortage of watchmakers who can service such an intricate and complex mechanism). While spending over 150K on a minute repeater watch may not deter many in the select group who are privileged enough to own these ticking masterpieces, there will be other enthusiasts who want a minute repeater, but the acquisition of such a timepiece is a once in a lifetime “holy grail”. Are there any minute repeating watches out there which are beautiful and pedigreed yet stay comparatively reasonable in price?

Happily, there is. The IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater watch is the one to have a close look at. This is a really wonderful watch, which in gold or platinum has the timelessly classic elegance which has made all of the watches in the Portuguese collection such a success for IWC. While it is not “inexpensive” in any measure of the term, the asking price of the IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater is well under the cost of competitive offerings from other high prestige watchmaking houses, largely due to the fact that a minute repeater module is united to a base manual winding movement. While not quite as visually breathtaking (i.e. you can’t see the minute repeater hammers in operation, as they are under the dial on the Portuguese) this construction enables IWC to offer this watch at a more reasonable price than were it an integrated design. Ultimately, this is a very beautiful and exclusive timepiece that gives you the “Queen of Complications” in a package which emphasizes classical aesthetics and embodies IWC’s highly respected emphasis on intelligent and practical horological innovation.

Jon Lovitz hasn’t been in a blockbuster movie for 10 years - that is - if you consider “The Wedding Singer” a blockbuster movie. This would also mean you would have to consider his roll in “The Wedding Singer” that of a Supporting Actor…

Its surprising that he hasn’t been able to get better acting jobs in Hollywood since he migrated out west in 1992 after leaving Saturday Night Live. He was on top back then. He went the “kid friendly route (which my kids appreciate) - Think “Rat Race” and “City Slickers 2: Search for Curly’s Gold”.

But, in the last 10 years he has managed to maintain his “working actor” status picking up small rolls in films and TV shows with names like “Pancho’s Pizza”,”Bailey’s Billion$”, and “Stripperella” - just to name a few.

In Lovitz defense he has been in 5 episodes of “The Simpson’s” in the last 10 years…ok, in the last 12 years.

He has also had some decent roles in “The Benchwarmers”, “The Producers”, as well as a small part in David Spade’s breakout movie “Dickie Robert’s: Former Child Star”. Needless to say Lovitz has yet to get his big movie role.

Lucky for him he has an uncanny way of saying “Subway - Eat Frrrrrresh!”

For the last year or so Lovitz has been the spokesperson for Subway Sandwich shop using his humor and personality to successfully peddle BLT’s and Clubs in a way Jared just couldn’t.

Subway must be paying well - as Lovitz is casually seen here (not eating at Subway) wearing the very exclusive Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Rubens Barrichello Limited Edition watch. This is one of the hardest watches in the world to acquire and is sometimes found on Ebay for as much as 80k!

Corum watches have a strong character, on that there is no question. The fact that Corum has employed the tonneau “cage” type case (fitted with sapphire crystal even on the sides) of their famous Golden Bridge watch to show off this tourbillon’s remarkable beauty is a big plus. This is a watch which reveals the fascinating mechanics of the world’s most celebrated complication to the maximum, which to my view is the main reason that most collectors acquire a tourbillon to begin with.

Then there is the appropriately named Classical Billionaire Tourbillon watch. This tourbillon timepiece shares the sapphire bridge design of the Panoramique, but places it in a round case, which is an over-the-top explosion of diamonds and sapphires. But make no mistake, the gem-setting is absolutely stunning, making this one of the best executed haute joaillerie tourbillons made by anyone. Don’t feel it’s spectacular enough on the strap? Then you can order your Billionaire Tourbillon watch with a bracelet fit for a sultan, which is paved with baguette diamonds or a combination of diamonds and sapphires. Don’t hesitate too long, though–Corum will only be making ten pieces of each variation.

While Corum may not be a movement “manufacturer” per se, they definitely know whom to enlist to realize masterful creations such as these. The stunning sapphire bridge tourbillon movements were conceived by Cristophe Claret, one of the greatest living master watchmakers, and a specialist in repeater and tourbillon complications. Corum is in good company; Monsieur Claret’s formidable horological genius has been employed by Harry Winston in their acclaimed Opus watch series, and also in such showstoppers as the Ulysse Nardin Genghis Khan watch and the Girard-Perregaux Opera I.
