Bvlgari watches: far more than high fashion

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

bvlgari-watch.jpgI’m really impressed with the way that Bvlgari has come along as a watch company. Of course, for years the house of Bvlgari has been a very prestigious name, and intimately associated with luxury, distinctive elegant designs, and famous and glamorous doings, but watches—well, not quite so much. Now, things are quite different. Under the current management, Bvlgari has taken great strides to advance as a high luxury watchmaker, and the results are most impressive. Bvlgari fit and finish is excellent, and moreover, the watches are real contenders amongst their peers.

My favorite Bvlgari watches are distinctly different from one another in flavor. One is the Bvlgari Diagono Acqua 2000M, which gets back to dive watch basics–its clean, uncluttered, and non-gimmicky. It also has all the important attributes in place: an easily visible luminous dial, a precisely turning unidirectional bezel, a time-tested automatic movement, and truly exceptional water resistance (2000m!) for the most demanding dive applications. The Bvlgari jointed rubber strap compliments the watch nicely, being light in weight and strong, yet intricate and visually interesting. All in all, I think this is one of the better designed sports timepieces currently in the luxury segment.

Another pleasing addition to the Bvlgari watch lineup is the Bvlgari-Bvlgari XL Power Reserve watch. I find this watch, with its intricate silver and black dial to be superbly attractive, and the 41mm case size accentuates it perfectly. Add to that the power reserve complication, animated by the modified Frederic Piguet movement, and you have a very well executed larger dress watch with an expressive attitude. This Bvlgari watch combines classical and contemporary design elements with elan.

Bvlgari’s haute horlogerie watches, particularly those in the Assioma line, are also worthy of praise, but that’s a subject for a future blog!

Jim Belushi opts for Tag Heuer

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

jim-belushi-watch.jpgWithout looking at his resume, I really couldn’t remember what movies Jim Belushi had actually been in. Let’s face it - he hasn’t had blockbuster film….. ever - and his latest flick “Underdog” isn’t winning an Oscar either.

But you can’t say the Belushi name without thinking about Jim’s legendary brother John who appeared in some of America’s biggest cult classics like “Animal House”, “Continental Divide”, and “The Blues Brothers”. I think it is also important to note that Jim’s brother John also spent 4-5 years at Saturday Night Live developing some of the greatest skits in SNL history before his tragic passing.

When you take a glimpse into the past of Jim Belushi, you might actually find that he has been in 30 movies in 25 years - which theoretically is a pretty damn good run. This is - in fact 20 more movies then his more famous older brother appeared in. In LA, any actor who has been in 30 movies would be considered a real “working actor”.

Unfortunately some of Jim Belushi’s most notable films were also his least notable roles. He played a reporter in “Canadian Bacon” as well as a shopping mall Santa Claus in “Jingle All The Way”. He also played Rob Lowe’s friend in “About Last Night” as well as a salesman in “Little Shop of Horrors”. My favorite Jim Belushi film is also the most financially successful film in his cache. In my humble opinion Jim Belushi’s best movie was in fact “Trading Places” with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd where he played a man in a Gorilla suit named Harvey.

Still, when it comes to fine watches - Jim Belushi is nobody’s monkey. Seen here Belushi is wearing a very pragmatic Tag Heuer Carrera watch which seems to be a favorite amongst many celebrities these days..

A tough act to follow: the Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk Pro 1000M “Challenger of Record” Tourbillon watch

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

GP-Sea-hawk-tourbillonjpg.jpgSome watches are all about breaking the rules. One excellent example of this sort of rebellious timepiece is the Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk Pro 1000M “Challenger of Record” Tourbillon.

Records aren’t the only thing this Girard-Perregaux watch challenges; it also challenges ones ability to place it in almost any category. With its superb flying tourbillon, this timepiece has one of the most prestigious and difficult complications in all of watchmaking, and is thus in that rarefied realm of timepieces known as “haute horlogerie”. Yet, it is also an extremely over-qualified divers watch, complete with water resistance to a colossal 1000 meters. That is, until you consider the fact that the luxurious crocodile strap sort of militates against using it for that purpose. At the same time, it’s really too chunky to be a dress watch on any but the largest individuals, who better be wearing the most loose fitting cuffs, I might add. How about general sports? That sexy carbon fiber dial all but screams that word, but who wants to subject an extremely fine 100K-plus 18K gold tourbillon watch to shocks, knocks, and abuse? Not I, dear readers.

Ah, well. You see what I’m getting it. However, all of these contradictions somehow only make this extremely cool watch that much more tantalizing. What is the Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk Pro 1000M “Challenger of Record” Tourbillon’s reason for being? Pretty much this: to be an edgy, beautifully crafted watch that just says “because I can”. Which is really what the enjoyment of finer watches in general is about. Practical folks will efficiently get the time from cell phones and PDAs, and there’s nothing wrong with that–but those of us who are afflicted with the incurable malady of “watch sickness” will go about getting this simple procedure accomplished in the most impractical (and ruinously expensive) ways. And, naturally, loving every minute of it!

Borat: Tag Heuer "Isa Verrra Nicea-Eh"

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

borat.jpgSacha Baron Cohen isn’t your stereotypical “Yuk-Yuk” type of comedian. His style of comedy makes you feel terribly uncomfortable - while laughing until yer gut hurts. In his blockbuster smash “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” Cohen offended almost every person in the United States except for those who couldn’t wait to see the movie.

Cohen is the mastermind behind Borat, as well as other characters Ali G and Bruno. Ali G - is a bit of a daffy wannabe hip-hop Barbara Walters, while Bruno is a gay Austrian fashion reporter who is about to make his big screen debut next summer in the self title movie “Bruno”.

The success of the Borat movie initially made a lot of folks in Kazakhstan pretty upset because of the way it depicted their country’s culture. They even filed a law suit against Cohen which was later dropped. Ironically, a report came out shortly after saying that tourism in Kazakhstan was up over 15% the year Cohen’s movie came out….

So what watch does this comedic mastermind consider when its time to go buy a fine Swiss timepiece? Thats right, Cohen wears a Tag Heuer Aquaracer. Seen here, Cohen is seen with his wife and new baby.

Quartz For Sports:  The TAG Heuer Professional Golf Watch

Monday, December 10th, 2007

golf-watch.jpgA vast proportion of the ink (traditional and electronic) gets expended upon timepieces which are mechanically driven.  This makes sense—after all, the art of traditional watchmaking, and all the fascinating elements which make it so wondrous are embodied in these timepieces, with their finely decorated movements, charming complications, and their softly ticking balance wheels.

That said, there are in fact some very cool quartz watches out there, which do serve a place in even the most seasoned collection.  Today’s case in point is the very well designed and attractive TAG Heuer Professional Golf watch.  The horological buzz generally goes that playing golf while wearing a mechanical watch (particularly a very slim automatic-winding one) is at best, not advisable.  While the topic is a contentious one and opinions do differ, most seem to agree that the G-forces imparted by the golf swing can damage the delicate balance staff, as well as other intricate structures in the mechanism.  Why take a chance?  Plus, most wristwatches are awkward enough to interfere with the wrist movements, which is why, aside from ads in which the golfer wears a watch brand which sponsors him/her, you don’t see these athletes wearing them while actually playing. (The same can be said for tennis pros)  The TAG Heuer Golf watch is one exception, and it was designed specifically to be worn while swinging a club, with the input of perhaps the greatest living golf professional in the world today–Tiger Woods.

The TAG Heuer Professional Golf watch has an extremely sporty, yet very elegant design. Because its movement is electronically powered, the case can be uncompromisingly slender and ergonomic.  It’s also feathery light thanks to its titanium and steel construction, and amazingly supple, thin silicon strap.  The fact that the “buckle” is part of the case means that you don’t have anything digging into your wrist.  The crown also, is on the left side of the case, and recessed nicely, meaning it won’t press uncomfortably into the back of the hand.   This watch feels amazing on–more accurately, it really doesn’t feel like you even have a watch on, that’s how comfortable this piece really is.

However, this is not a design which only has appeal for golfers; its also a perfect choice for anyone who’s looking for a tough, slender and unobtrusive sports watch that takes comfort to the maximum.  In addition to its well-known precision, quartz technology is extremely tough, and it allows for the creation of an extremely slim timepiece–perfect for certain applications.  This excellent TAG Heuer watch uses both of those attributes to their best advantage.

Russell Crowe Gets Past Rolex - Moves on to Chopard

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

russell-crow.jpgI admit it, when I got my first professional taste of success - I too ran out and bought a BMW and a Rolex. Don’t be upset if this has also happened to you too. When you have a little cash in your pocket, a BMW and a Rolex are like two sirens calling to you - and you have an overwhelming sensation to gravitate toward them. It’s actually quite a natural phenomenon…

The luster of these purchases generally last a few years and then you realized that you have the same watch and car everyone else has. And there you are with your Beemer, Roller, tan khakis, and blue button down dress shirt realizing it is time for a change.

I remember that day like it was yesterday. Don’t get me wrong, I mean no slight to any Rolex or BMW owners - they really are great machines in their own right. The thing is - my personal style changed - as it does every few years or so. After I sold my first Rolex, I went the other direction and bought a Frank Muller Casablanca, definitely a more progressive timepiece for the “new” me.

It also seems as if our favorite Aussie Roman Gladiator has also had his tastes change. Seen here Russell Crowe is sitting with Giorgio Armani watching his South Sidney rugby league team compete with another Aussie rugby team.

Those familiar with Russell’s wrist - knows he has always religiously worn his trusty Rolex - no matter what he is doing. But… it seems as if Russell might have grown out of Rolex or quite possibly expanded his horological horizons these days opting for a more stylish and refined Chopard Extra-Plate watch.

Hey Russell, what did you trade the Beemer in for?

Philanthropy and Haute Horlogerie unite: The Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Clinton Foundation Equation of Time watch

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

EOT.gifWhen I first heard rumors of the introduction of a ”Bill Clinton watch”[tag] from Audemars Piguet, a few sarcastically humorous thoughts came to mind, as I rolled my eyes slightly. Not being a major fan of the ex-president, I was a bit dismissive of the idea, something that in hindsight was undeserved. The timepiece used for this very special limited edition is extremely beautiful, quite probably the finest celebrity collaboration watch [tag]Audemars Piguet has yet introduced.

The Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Clinton Foundation Equation of Time watch is a fine variation upon the exquisite Jules Audemars Equation of Time watch, an extremely complex self-winding masterpiece from Audemars Piguet that in my opinion is one of the most gorgeous astronomic wristwatches currently in production. In addition to a perpetual calendar with leap year indication and moonphase, the “EOT” as it is affectionately known by collectors also features the remarkable equation of time complication–a seldom-seen horological specialty that indicates in a plus or minus value the difference between mean civil time and true solar time. What makes the Audemars Piguet Equation of Time even more exceptional is that it also accurately indicates the exact moment of solar culmination and sunrise and sunset in a specific location for which the watch is specially calibrated. The legendary 2120 caliber movement inside this watch is another point that collectors will appreciate. This combination of desirable elements makes this Audemars Piguet watch truly remarkable in every aspect–a true treat for connoisseurs.

The special design features which link this timepiece to our 42nd president are very elegant and subtle. For example, have a look at the inner bezel rehaut–instead of a city, it is marked with the inscription “The White House”. A very nice detail, to be sure. Also very attractive is the caseback, which is formally engraved with the seal “William J. Clinton 42nd President of the United States”. While Audemars Piguet has always done a very good job in tasteful commemorative details (yes, even on some of the more far-out Offshores, in my opinion), this one is certainly the most sublime yet. Audemars Piguet’s choice of a timepiece from the Jules Audemars collection is also a refreshing change of pace that I applaud. Available directly through Audemars Piguet only, the Clinton Foundation Equation of Time watch is presented in an edition of 42 pieces each in 18K white gold, 18K pink gold, and platinum.

A final thought. I understand that Mr. Clinton is a passionate devotee of fine timepieces, and I suspect that if he and I were to sit down over coffee, we could no doubt find much to converse about enjoyably as fellow watch-o-philes. Political differences aside, I do appreciate much of the work that the Clinton Foundation is devoted to, including care and treatment for those afflicted with HIV/AIDS, as well as education, health and poverty issues throughout the world. The fact that a significant portion of each watch’s purchase price goes directly to such causes is admirable, and gives an extra measure of satisfaction to owning such a sterling example of haute horlogerie.

Audemars Piguet–so much more than just the Royal Oak Offshore

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

ap-millenary.jpgSome collectors occasionally opine that Audemars Piguet may be somewhat a victim of its own success, so far as their famous Royal Oak and (particularly) the ultra-popular Royal Oak Offshore watch lines are concerned. What they are of course talking about is the dominating presence of these collections within the brand, and how these are the only watches which much of the public thinks of when Audemars Piguet comes up. Some even go further, suggesting that the brand does nothing to change this, and even fans the flames by continually introducing tantalizing new limited edition Offshore watches, such as the Rubens Barrichello Offshore, the forged carbon Alinghi, or the Shaquille O’Neal–to the neglect of other collections.

While I will concede that the Royal Oak collection are certainly Audemars Piguet’s best sellers, I don’t think that this diminishes the excellence, innovation and superb execution of AP’s other watch collections. A prime example of this is the beautiful, yet attractively unusual Millenary watch collection, presented in a diverse range of models for both men and women. A striking variation upon the ever popular classical round dress watch, these timepieces show off a stunning oval form, whose shape evokes the Roman Coliseum. Aside from the excellence of the finishing, and the luxurious detail, another great thing about this line is that this is one of the few “larger” watches which people with average size wrists can wear well, due to the fact that the overall height is not too great, and the diameter is expressed from side to side. This means that if your wrist is modest, this watch will not overshoot it, yet still have great presence. The dials on these watches are also some of the most expressive and attractive on the market, blending classical elements with a slightly Dali-esque twist. If you’ve not seen any of the Millenaries in person, I think you are in for a treat.

Extraordinarily advanced complicated pieces like the Millenary MC12 Tourbillon watch and the Tradition d’Excellence No.5 watch, which debuted the extraordinary new AP escapement show that Audemars Piguet is about far more than just limited edition Royal Oak Offshores. Examining many of the lovely pieces in the classical Jules Audemars and Edward Piguet watch collections will also reveal many exceptional works of watchmaking art–such uncompromising creations demonstrate that the horological substance this great brand is beloved for by purists continues on with undiminished strength.
