The chronograph function is almost universally considered a “guy’s thing”–its part of that technical circle that includes precise machinery, cars, speed, time measurement, and other things that are considered just about fundamental in the male psyche.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be that way though.  I find it hard to believe that many women could resist the beautiful design and lavish expression of the Milus Apiana Chronograph.  With its striking rectangular case, pastel colors, and dials which are stylish and expressive, this Milus watch has all the right touches to win the affections of ladies. Spike Lee is no doubt a gifted filmmaker making some of America’s most controversial films such as Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing, and Jungle Fever. Born in Atlanta, Ga., Spike’s family migrated north to Brooklyn, where Spike quickly feel in love with the Mets, Yankees, Knicks, and movie making.

He got a lot of inspiration from the world around him and made many movies in his own backyard. His signature look is a NY Yankees baseball hat, sports jersey, and tortoise shell frames for his spectacles.

Phoebe Price is probably the most famous person you have never heard of. She started her career as a runway model taking her trade to places like Athens and Milan. Phoebe Price may not be on the A-List yet, but she sure knows how to act like an A-Lister. Dress and accessorized like she is at a Milan photo shoot, she is seen here filling her Bentley while wearing something resembling a high fashion space suit.

Brilliant colors can often be a great accent on a sporty timepiece.  From sports watch classics like the “Pepsi”-bezel Rolex GMT Master, to modern introductions such as the Anonimo Polluce Bronze watch, with its bright orange dial, bronze case, and leather strap with matching orange stitching, eye-catching colors just seem to emphasize the bold character of a great sports timepiece, and the daring or adventurous things that such watches seem to be purpose-designed for. 

JeanRichard understands this very well.  Their Grand TV Screen Chronoscope watch is one of my favorite colorful sports timepieces.  While each variant of this model has something attractive going for it, I prefer the bold variation with a blue graduated bezel, red hands, and the black crocodile strap with contrasting red stitching.  This is a very cool–and handsome–combination of colors, and they effectively accentuate the technical appearance of this Daniel Jean-Richard watch, with its chronograph function, complex dial, and interesting crown-operated internal rotating bezel.

The Girard-Perregaux BMW Oracle Racing watch collection offers some fantastic choices as well, with luxurious combinations of exotic materials, exclusive mechanical functions and plenty of provocative color.

With the trends toward big(ger) watches in full bloom, its interesting to see the effect that this has on established lines of watches from great brands. Some of the really bold watches (which were large from the start), such as the Audemars Piguet Offshore Chronograph collection seem to thrive on growing bigger and bigger–this is exemplified by Offshore watch variants like the legendary T3 chronograph, and the new Shaquille O’Neal timepiece. While not everyone can wear these monsters, they look fantastic, and have a great style that looks whole and harmonious. The Hublot Big Bang series is another that has grown up around the large watch trend, and carries its big, bad boldness in a way that proclaims, “I was born to do this!”

Classical watches have not been so uniformly successful when given a size increase. For example, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s very classic Master Control Grande Taille watch looked extremely balanced when it was in its original 36mm size. Small for today’s tastes, perhaps, but the watch looked beautiful. Today, the new model uses a movement which is similar in size to that used in the previous model, but a case which is 4mm wider. To me, the resulting creation looks a bit awkward, with a bezel that is too wide, and a date wheel that has migrated closer to the center; the frame around the date also emphasizes this. While the new 40mm creation may be more appealing to the mass market, I can’t help but see a smaller watch which was pushed to become large. Like a gangly adolescent, this watch seems to be suffering slightly from growing pains.

One dressy timepiece which I think has in fact benefited aesthetically from the up-sizing treatment, is the IWC Portofino watch. The original was pleasant, but it didn’t really “pop” in the original 36mm size, particularly with the super slim baton hands on the dial; needless to say, the Portofino wasn’t the most inquired about [tag]IWC[tag] timepiece. However, in its new 39mm case, the Portofino watch suddenly has much more presence, a quality also enhanced by the beautiful and shapely leaf hands, which have a lot more panache than the somewhat stuffy batons. I’ll bet IWC has seen a much warmer customer response to the Portofino since introducing this new model

So I was watching VH1 the other night and the video for Alicia Keys hit song “No One” came on. As I watched it, I was actually surprised at how low budget the video was. In the video she literally wore a tore-up Flashdance style sweater while singing and playing Piano in the rain. No back up dancers, no set, maybe one or two extras in the video at most. Thats it.

As I sat and tried to decide whether I liked the song - something hit me like a ton of bricks. It was right around the 1:10 minute mark in the song. There it was…. a total arrant product shot of a Piaget Polo watch. Don’t get me wrong I have seen John Mayer on video wearing and IWC big pilot, or Kanye on stage wearing an Audemar Piguet but this was different.

This wasn’t your standard a 3 second shot of Alicia Keys wearing a Piaget watch - this was a 3 second shot of a Piaget watch. You couldn’t see anything else but the watch… There was no real reason why they had to do it - because generally people like me who want to know what people are wearing, will figure it out.

I sat there a bit shocked watching the rest of the video when all of a sudden - BAM! it happened again right at the 3 minute mark - but this time she was wearing a different Piaget watch. This time Alicia Keys was wearing a Piaget Possession watch. Is Alicia Keys on the Piaget payroll? Has Piaget made her a brand ambassador and not went public with it yet?

I guess “everything’s gonna be alright” with Alicia and Piaget…

I’ve opined in the past that Piaget doesn’t get nearly the recognition it deserves in the realm of high-end luxury watchmaking.  Piaget’s excellence isn’t just visible in their fine range of dress watches, or their own extremely thin and refined in-house movements.  Piaget’s elaborate and extremely interesting tourbillon watches demonstrate once again how serious this brand is as a Manufacture of haute horlogerie.

Complications are not new to Piaget.  In the late 90’s, I well remember admiring the now discontinued Governeur watch line which featured some very fine perpetual calendars, and even an absolutely extraordinary Grande et Petite Sonnerie containing a movement designed by none other than the brilliant Francois-Paul Journe.  This latter movement served as a basis for Journe’s own Sonnerie Souveraine, one of the most staggering chiming wristwatches ever made.

For now, Piaget seems to be focusing primarily on tourbillons.  This is understandable, as the public fascination with “the whirlwind” is nearly insatiable.  Piaget’s creations will not disappoint; the fascinating Piaget Polo Tourbillon Relatif watch displays an extremely interesting orbital tourbillon whose mechanism is united with the minute hand.  My favorite of the Piaget tourbillon watches, however, is the Emperador Tourbillon Skeleton.  The Emperador case is a heart-stopper–curvaceous, sensual, intricately finished, and extremely elegant–and then you have the gorgeous openworked movement, with the large, flying tourbillon proudly ruling over all.  Pink gold, white gold…doesn’t matter.  It’s equally stunning either way.

One of my favorite accents on a fine watch are blued steel hands.  There is just something about those shimmering, lustrous hands traveling across a clean, elegantly laid out dial that exudes class, quality, and tradition in a big way.  Many brands have made models which display exquisitely blued steel hands, so covering all of them all in a brief space would almost certainly be an exercise in futility.  However, there are a few which immediately spring to mind, that convey just how attractive traditionally blued hands are.

Jaquet Droz watches are famous for their traditionally fire-blued hands.  Picking a favorite from this brand is extremely difficult, but one which really stands out to my eyes is the Grande Heure Minute Cerclee watch–I love the length of those hands, which really emphasizes how beautifully the bluing is executed by the Jaquet Droz artisans.  The complicated Quantieme Perpetuel Email watch is also stunning, with its dual blued serpentine hands for the calendar indications.  You also can’t go wrong with the brand’s ever popular Grande Seconde watch in its many variations, especially the classic white enamel version, which brings the sumptuous richness of the Jaquet Droz bluing to its absolute maximum.

The Glashutte Original Senator Meissen is sheer perfection, too, and doubly special. Not only does it feature fabulously shaped Poire-style hands with traditional bluing, these gorgeous hands pop out at you from an absolutely amazing crisp, white, and lustrously glossy dial made from world-famous Meissen porcelain, which is marked with ever-so-slender Roman numerals.  Fabulous!
