Four new Bell & Ross watches bring out the bold attitude of the BR Instrument timepieces to the maximum. The BR 01-92 Yellow and BR 01-92 Red watches stand out brilliantly with bright yellow and red Superluminova material against a black dial background and an equally stealthy blackened stainless steel case–these watches both measure 46mm in diameter, and are tailor made for lovers of wrist-filling timepieces. The TAG Heuer Monaco collection contains some of the most iconic sports chronographs ever made.  Like the Daytona Cosmograph watch from Rolex, or the original Zenith El Primero chronograph, how can you possibly fail to instantly recognize the Monaco Chronograph timepiece, with its distinctive TV-style square case?  This watch was a real landmark watch design of the 1960’s, and created a cult following among fans that still exists to this day.

History is something that brings real flavor to a watch design, and the TAG Heuer Monaco timepiece brings a lot to the table in that regard.  Introduced in 1969, its case design was notable, being the first water resistant square case on the market.  Straightforward, masculine and confident, the design also showcased a new micro-rotor automatic movement (the Caliber 11) which was a collaboration between Heuer, Breitling, and Buren, each of whom had involvement in the creation of this inventive movement.  While this movement is no longer employed in the current Monaco watch, the historic Caliber 11 demonstrated that lever and cam chronographs were a viable alternative to column-wheel designs, even if they were slightly less elaborate to manufacture and assemble.  It also paved the way for a generation of now-legendary ETA calibers which would would make their mark in the 1970’s.

Add to all of that the celebrity cachet Steve McQueen brought this watch after choosing to wear it in the 1971 film “Le Mans”, and you definitely have a fascinating mechanical object that far transcends being a mere timekeeping instrument.  So, wear your TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph watch with pride–you are sporting a true classic!

Ceramic has been a very popular material in the creation of luxury watches lately–IWC (an early pioneer of ceramic in watchmaking) has recently shown off their Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition TOP GUN watch, as well as bringing out an Ingenieur watch variant with a ceramic bezel.  Chanel has made a big point of their use of ceramic in their J-12 watch collection, and many of the Hublot Big Bang watch variants showcase ceramic elements in different colors.  Even ultra-conservative Rolex has incorporated this high-tech material in their new Yacht-Master II and redesigned GMT-Master II models.

Bell & Ross is one of the latest to jump on the ceramic trend, with the recent introduction of their BR 03-92 White Ceramic timepiece.  With its bold, large, square case, the Bell & Ross BR watch design is a natural teamed up with the glossy, striking presence that ceramic gives off.  These are definitely very fashion forward timepieces to begin with, and the white ceramic heightens that effect–so, I applaud Bell & Ross for not being shy with their vision.  Ultimately, many Bell & Ross watches would be extremely appealing rendered in ceramic.

I hope that Bell & Ross offers a 46mm BR 01-92 watch in black ceramic, which I feel would look awesome, maybe with a choice between a polished or matte surface for the case—either way, the watch would look very handsome, especially with the cool, instrument-style luminous dials that these watches have.  The shiny look of ceramic would also look great on the new BR 02 dive watch, particularly accented by pink gold.   Oh well, enough wishing–I’ll just have to be patient and see what Bell & Ross comes up with!
